I talked to P Juan Urbina. So far this spring he has thrown twice in
the pen and one BP. He has one more live BP scheduled and then expects to pitch
in his first ST game. He also expects to come out of the pen in 2013, starting
off once again in Savannah.
I also heard from P Erik Goeddel. He said “The face is doing much better,
just got cleared for full activity today, and I think I get to throw in a
scrimmage later this week.”
As you remember, Goeddel was hit in the face a few weeks ago and none of us were sure he'd make it back this quick. Great news!
There’s a writer on
Through The Fence (link) named Paul
West that just wrote a piece on the 2013 Mets. The third paragraph led with “first, I feel
good about the offense…”. The story ends
with: “their defense is as solid as it’s been in years”. Who is Paul West and
is this the same team I write about?
The Detroit Tigers LHH-OF
Brennan Boesch, who is owed 1/6th of
his $2.3mil salary if he is not claimed. The 27-yr. old 2012 stat line: .240/.286/.372
, 12-HR, 503-AB. That would be $383,333
to check him out… but, his .286 OBP was the 4th-worst in MLB last year. On
paper, these are lower numbers than Lucas Duda’s projections. My vote would be
to pass.
For those of you that
think the Mets have a chance finishing above 4th place, here are the
projected rotations in the NL East:
Atlanta - 1 RHP Tim Hudson,
2 RHP Kris
Medlen, 3 LHP Mike Minor, 4
LHP Paul Maholm , 5 RHP Julio Teheran.
Miami - 1 RHP Ricky Nolasco, 2 RHP Henderson
Alvarez, 3 LHP Wade LeBlanc, 4
RHP Nathan Eovaldi, 5 RHP Jacob
Turner
Philadelphia - 1 LHP Cole Hamels, 2
RHP Roy Halladay, 3 LHP Cliff Lee,
4 RHP Kyle
Kendrick, 5 LHP John Lannan
Washington - 1 RHP Stephen Strasburg, 2 LHP Gio Gonzalez,
3 RHP Jordan
Zimmermann, 4 RHP Dan Haren, 5
LHP Ross Detwiler
(and let’s remember… this is supposed to be the Mets’
strength…)
Wow...I forgot about Urbina...Hopefully he can bounce back from his horrific season last year and get back on the prospect map.
ReplyDeleteUrbina, Akeel Morris, Goeddel, Matz...
ReplyDeleteWe all know the pitchers that get all the buzz, but there's a lot of wild cards out there that could really impress and possibly pitch their way back into prospect status.
My sleeper pick this season is Matz. I saw a little video about him yesterday and he said he feels great. Viola was excited about him. Said he's a lefty that throws 95+, with a good change up, and a really tight slider.
Think about that for a second. This guy was drafted as a kid, and spent years hurt or rehabbing. Suddenly, he's grown up and it's as if the Mets just got a top ten pick that's a left handed starter and already has three average to plus pitches. If Matz starts twenty games this year, I believe he'll be ranked just behind Syndegaard this time next year.
What a pick that would be? The problem is that he'll have to be protected next year because of the rule 5 draft. He spent so much time not pitching, his development has stalled and they'll have to use a 40 man spot to hold on to him. Like I said, if he makes those starts, I think he'll be worth it.
Hopefully, he starts off fast and moves quickly. Lets all pray this guy stays pain free. His left arm is a cannon.
Charles,
ReplyDeleteI'm really hoping Matz injuries woes are behind him. This system needs a left handed pitching prospect bad.
If they are, he's going to be awesome.
ReplyDeleteSoto:
ReplyDeleteMorris has a great attitude.
Let me know if you want to interview him. I'm sure I could hook the two of you up.
Charles:
ReplyDeleteSneaking a peek at Toby's site again, huh? :)
I talked to Matz today.
He doesn't know if he's coming to Queens let. They haven't told him anything.
One more thing on Matz... and this is no disrespect to him...
ReplyDelete95% of the time... once you have arm problems... you ALWAYS come back to the problems
