Mack Ade – Morning Report – 3-19-13

Jordany Valdespin is tied in the Grapefruit league in home runs (4)

1B Nick Evans has been released by the Dodgers

  1. Felt good to get back in a game today. Tossed 3innings and 1 hit. Felt great

A funny one…  (“In a long-standing and pathetic family tradition, father and son Anthony and Justin Stroud this week made their incredibly depressing annual trip down to Florida to watch the New York Mets play in spring training, sources confirmed Sunday”) from The Onion - link

Even funnier is Ed Marcus (“Earlier today in his daily blog posting, ESPN Mets beat writer, Adam Rubin posed an interesting question “Where would the Mets be today had Carlos Beltran connected with that Adam Wainwright curve-ball ?”) - link

The Pirates reassigned pitches Gerrit Cole, Brooks Brown, Kris Johnson and Kyle Waldrop, and catcher Ali Solis. Right-hander Phil Irwin was optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis, leaving 49 players in camp, including 12 on non-roster invitations.

The Cubs signed 25-year-old Cuban RHP Armando Rivero for a $3.1 million bonus

Monday Game Notes:

C Travis d’Arnaud and CF Matt den Dekker continue to be played fueling speculation that they do indeed stand a chance to make this team that is desperately in need of a spark plug.

Brandon Hicks started at third base.

SP Matt Harvey went scoreless until the 4th when he gave up two doubles and a single.

It was good to see a little Duda power (two-run homer in the 2nd after a d’Arnaud single).

        Harvey's line: 5 1/3 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 6 K, BB

I don’t think I’ve written all year that Andrew Brown drove in a run… d’Arnaud scored again after his second hit… it’s going to hard to send this kid down.

Okay… here’s your first big test for the pen… one run lead after seven… you pitch for a team that doesn’t produce a lot of runs and hits so, if you want to win this, you have to hold it. Josh Edgin (0.2-IP, 0-R), LaTroy Hawkins (1.0-IP, 0-R), and Scott Atchison (1.0-IP, 0-R) did their jobs. And then, the closer, Bobby Parnell, goes 1-2-3. THAT’S how the Mets are going to have to win around 30-35 of their games this season if they want to compete.

        Good job.
