"Who can take tomorrow,
Dip it in a dream,
Separate the sorrow
And collect up all the cream?"
Ummm... The Sandyman... can?
Photoshop? Anyone?... Anyone?... |
Hola, mi compaƱeros. I know... it's been awhile since I last provided support (i.e., a lifesaver) to my boy Sandy from the attacks on the left, center and right of the blog world. In fact, it's been three weeks since I wrote that patience is a virtue that will do the Mets well in the long run (which, in turn, further exposed the hypersensitive nature and nonsensical ramblings of those in the Mets blogosphere who have no sense of humor and take themselves WAY, WAY too seriously; but I digress...).
Alas, my dear readers, I fear that I may be about to join a fool's folly, and risk uncorking on Sandy's plan before its time. However, before I risk looking like former Met and (not coincidentally) wine aficionado Steve Trachsel begging out of a critical playoff game due to a weakly hit comebacker on his wittle, bitty knee, I will give Sandy another 10 days.
But 10 days is all he's got.
Don't get me wrong here, folks. I believe I made a valid point that Sandy's patience has, for the most part, worked to the Mets' benefit. But either his dog or a string around his finger needs to remind Sandy, everytime he snuggles into bed at night, that: (a) we are NOT the small market Oakland A's; (b) the Yankees are primed for the kill; and, (c) the next ten days of spring training will be a time in which ALL loyal and veeeerrrryyyy patient Mets fans will judge him in the continuing saga titled, "The Bourne Deception."
Yes, indeed... Sandy has one, final chance at redemption from the Bourne fiasco to get a Major League experienced and productive outfielder before April 1 from one of the other 29 teams-- all of which have apparently found it easy enough to find OFs who both hit AND play the outfield.
If not, then we'll have to suck it up, and leave it to Byrd's wing and a prayer from the Mets promising, but perhaps not yet ready for prime time collection of young studs. In fairness, though... how can I leave Sandy hanging out there for that rabid blogosphere to feast upon? No.. that I will not do. I am here for you, Sandy... boobala... darlink.
So, here are some rumored "on the cusp" and "on the block" OFs that may be available in the next few days, and may be worth consideration to wear a 2013 Mets uniform:
Coco Crisp (OAK)
Rajai Davis (TOR)
David DeJesus (CHC)
Nate Schierholtz (CHC)
Darnell McDonald (CHC)
Jason Kubel (ARZ)
Gerardo Parra (ARZ)
Tony Gwynn (LAD)
Lew Ford (BAL)
Conor Jackson (BAL)
Mark Kotsay (SD)
Travis Buck (SD)
Felix Pie (PIT)
Jack Cust (TB)
Shelly Duncan (TB)
Ryan Sweeney (BOS)
Eric Young (COL)
Endy Chavez (KC)
OK... so they're not the cavalry. Please, by all means, feel free to throw some more names at Sandy in your follow up comments. I'm sure he reads Mack's Mets first thing in the morning over a cup o' joe.
But wherever the names come from... there WILL BE players available that are arguably better than some of the utility and platoon players (i.e., Cowgill, Valdespin, Duda, etc.) we've been rotating out there lately, and who can fill in quite nicely until future stars like den Dekker, Nimmo, etc. are ready.
Put another way... Sandy, the honeymoon is over... the clock is ticking.
Say your prayers, little one... and don't forget, my GM, to include everyone.
Else, like the sands through an hourglass, these may indeed be the last days of your useful baseball life.
Until next time...
At this point, I dont think its as much about the dollars as it is a lack of room on the 40 man roster.
ReplyDeleteAs it seems right now, we'll have to Designate 4 players on the 40 man roster right now for some guys who deserve to be on the Opening Day Roster.
The team has a lot of prospects being protected by the 40 man placement and if we try to slip them of it, another team will claim them and snatch them away.
As it stands now the following guys are "prospects" that are on the 40 man but wont be on the 25 man roster come April 1st.
Zack Wheeler
Robert Carson
Juerys Familia
Gonzalez German
Darin Gorski
Collin McHugh
Jenrry Mejia
Elvin Ramirez
Hansel Robles
Travis d'Arnaud
Wilmer Flores
Reese Havens
Wilfredo Tovar
Juan Lagares
Cesar Puello
Thats 15!! guys right there...thats ALL your non 25 man slots. Even removing Havens (which i think they will anyway) i think someone is going to take a flyer, snatch him up and put them on their 40 man or try to pass him through themselves.
There is a major roster crutch and I'm not sure how the brass is going to work through it.
Rey,
ReplyDeleteI'm with you 100%, bro. No excuse not to upgrade this team before April 1. Soto makes a good point with the 40 man issues, but like all other teams they will have to expose someone. There are guys available that are better than they have, and the cost will be minimal. I say the same about closer...yes, Parnell has looked great, but there is nothing behind him should he falter in the 9th when the real games begin. I'll take 1 OF, 1 closer, and play ball.
Excellent points, fellas. Soto, one way the Mets can get out of their dilemma is to deal more players for their needs, i.e., 2 for 1, 3 for 2 deals.
ReplyDeleteI guess the point I am making is the same as TP's... no excuses. Other teams will have 40 man roster issues to deal with, and have OFs to deal. So if Sandy sits idly by, then that's a BIG problem because it confirms he has a blind spot, i.e., sticking to the "plan" -- whatever the "plan" is -- at all costs.
Rey, mi amigo, I'm afraid you are pissing up the proverbial rope. Standy (short for standing pat) Alderson is not going to make a significant move prior to the sttart of the season. He's as much as said so himself. What you see is what you get.
ReplyDeleteIt seems that the plan is to see exactly what we have this year so he can make the most appropriate moves after this season. Will the youth of today (i.e. Duda, Nieuwenhuis, Cowgill, den Dekker, Valdespin, Baxter, Lagares, Puello) be the Mets of tomorrow? Who, if any, stays and who goes in trade, and what do we need to round out the team and make it competitive in 2014?
The roster crunch that Soto points out is real, but that is not what is preventing a trade. If we were already a playoff caliber team, in need of one player to put us over the top, the trade would be made. But that is not the case, and I for one, am not unhappy to see our youth movement put to the test i
Herb, I have to respectfully disagree with your take on Standy (good one). He has actually come across during several interviews with quite the opposite take. for example, he stated on the Fan that he regretted losing Hairston's 20 odd homers, and wished Hairston was available after the team lost out on Upton (indeed, the fact he went after Upton tells you what he also thinks if the OF situation). In addition, Sandy has stated that though other outfield options were exhausted in the offseason, other possibilities should open up over the course of the spring that could put the Mets in the position to acquire an experienced major league bat.
DeleteNow, call me a fool, but that doesn't sound like a man happy with the state of things and content with some master plan to go into the season with the present state of the outfield.
Again, and I know I am flying solo on this, but the Mets have a legitimate shot at the second wildcard spot based on past records of wildcard teams. I suspect Sabermetric Sandy also realizes this, and won't pass up the opportunity to pull a deal to get that experienced OF we need-- roster issues notwithstanding.
But I've been the fool before; to borrow from Billy Joel: you may be right, and I may be crazy.
I second the emotion...
ReplyDeleteThis is truly a solo flight :)
Rey,
ReplyDeleteI'm with you on this so it is not quite aq solo flight.
