B-Mets Game Notes - 4-10-13
Binghamton Mets (4-2) at
Erie Seawolves (3-3)
(Double-A Affiliate of the Detroit Tigers)
RHP Cory Mazzoni (1-0, 0.00) vs. RHP Patrick Cooper (0-1, 13.50)
LAST GAME: Although Binghamton got off to a good start, the offense stalled and the B-Mets lost to Erie 2-1. In the first inning, Rhyne Hughes hit a double off the right field wall to score Richard Lucas and give the B-Mets a 1-0 lead. Unfortu-nately, that was the only run they would score all night. Erie starter Kyle Lobstein settled down, and finished the night throwing 5.2 innings, giving up five hits, and just that one run. Rafael Montero was good on the mound for the second consecutive time. He gave up one earned run and struck out seven in six innings of work. With the game tied in the bot-tom of the seventh, Marcus Lemon hit a sac fly off of John Church to give Erie the 2-1 lead. That was all the offense they needed, as Justin Souza shut down the B-Mets 1-2-3 in the ninth to earn the save. Binghamton had their chances, but couldn’t cash in as they went 0-8 with RISP on the night.
BINGHAMTON STARTING PITCHER: RHP Cory Mazzoni will make his second start of the season, and his 16th career start for the B-Mets. He was excellent in his 2013 debut, however did not receive a decision in an eventual 2-1 Binghamton victory. Mazzoni threw 5.0 innings, gave up one unearned run on four hits, and struck out seven Akron Aeros. In his only start against Erie in 2012, he threw a complete game, seven-inning shut out on 7/13. He struck out just one batter, and gave up only four hits. Mazzoni was ranked the #10 prospect in the Mets organization by Baseball America prior to the 2013 season.
ERIE STARTING PITCHER: RHP Patrick Cooper will be making his second start in 2013, and his 18th in his Double-A career. He struggled in his first outing of the season, giving up three earned runs and eight hits in just two innings against Al-toona. Last season, he split time between Lakeland and Erie for the first two months of the season, before settling down in the Eastern League for the rest of the year. With Erie, he finished 3-10 in 23 games (17 starts) and threw 109.1 in-nings. He pitched against Binghamton twice last season; in relief on 4/29 (3 ER in 3 IP) and as a starter on 7/13 (L, CG, 6.0 IP, 2 ER, 2 H). His start on 7/13 was against B-Met starter Cory Mazzoni.
OFFENSIVE STRUGGLES: After Rhyne Hughes’ RBI double in the first inning last night, the B-Mets were held scoreless for the rest of the game. The team scattered eight hits in the ballgame, however went 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position. Hughes’ double was one of only two extra base hits.
LUCAS SHOWS OFF THE LUMBER: Richard Lucas had a great night at the plate last night, going 3-for-4 with a run scored. Lucas is the third B-Met to record a three-hit game in 2013 (Alonzo Harris, Blake Forsythe, & Josh Rodriguez).
