Friday, April 12, 2013  Game #9  Home Game #2
NYSEG Stadium  Binghamton, NY  7:05 PM

LAST GAME: The B-Mets lost to the New Hampshire Fisher Cats in the first home game of the year, 3-1. Binghamton got into the run column first after Cesar Puello scored Josh Rodriguez on an RBI fielder’s choice. New Hampshire returned the favor in the seventh inning, tying the game on a solo home run by Adam Loewen. Starting pitchers Logan Verrett (BIN)and Deck McGuire (NH) finished the night giving up one run in seven innings of work each. Verrett had it more difficult however, as he allowed seven Fisher Cat hits; McGuire allowed only two. In the top of the eighth inning, New Hampshire broke the 1-1 tie with a two-run home run by Kevin Pillar. The B-Mets threatened in the bottom of the ninth,  placing the tying run at first base with nobody out, but Chad Beck retired the next three to earn the save.

BINGHAMTON STARTING PITCHER: RHP Tyler Pill makes the second Double-A start of his career. He was tagged with the loss in his Binghamton debut, giving up five runs  in 5.0 innings against Akron. The day started off well for Tyler; he gave up one run through the first five innings, but things went south in the sixth. He allowed the first four batters to reach base, all of whom eventually scored, before he was yanked from the game. In 2012, he split time with between the Savannah and St. Lucie starting rotation. He finished the year strong, posting a 1.39 ERA in the second half of the year. Pill was selected by the Mets in the fourth round of the 2011 draft out of Cal State Fullerton.

NEW HAMPSHIRE STARTING PITCHER: RHP Tyson Brummett makes his first start as a New Hampshire Fisher Cat, but is no stranger to the Eastern League. He has spent at least part of every season since 2008 with Reading, before being picked up off of waivers by the Blue Jay organization in October 2012.Combined, he finished with an 11-28 record in his time with Reading. He pitched in his first and only Major League game with Philadelphia in the last game of the 2012 regular season; 0.2 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 2 K. He began this season in Buffalo, but was transferred to New Hampshire after just one start; 0.1 IP, 5 R, 3 H, 3 BB.

LEADING OFF: In eight out of the nine innings last night, B-Met pitchers allowed the first New Hampshire batter to reach base. They were able to escape in most cases, as the defense logged two double-plays, and Juan Centeno threw out all three of his potential base-stealers. The only New Hampshire runs came off of two home runs.

QUALITY START: Logan Verrett finished the night after throwing 7.0 innings and giving up one run. That start was the third quality start (at least 6.0 IP, 3 or less ER) for B-Met pitchers in 2013.

MULTI-HIT GAMES: After Josh Rodriguez went 2-for-4 in last night’s loss to New Hampshire, he became the fourth B-Met with at least two multi-hit games on the season. Darrell Ceciliani leads the team with three, and Alonzo Harris, Richard Lucas, and Rodriguez each have two.

STRUGGLING FOR RUNSLast night marks the fourth time in 2013 the B-Mets have failed to score more than two runs. Binghamton is averaging 3.29 runs per game, which is the lowest mark in the Eastern League. In 2012, Binghamton scored two or fewer runs 51 times.

CAN’T RUN ON CENTENO: Juan Centeno is a perfect 4-for-4 in throwing out runners trying to steal a base. He has thrown out the most runners of any Eastern League catcher in 2013. In 2012 with Binghamton, Centeno threw out 41% of potential base-stealers.

NEXT GAME PREVIEW: The B-Mets continue their four-game series with the New Hampshire Fisher Cats tomorrow afternoon. RHP Erik Goedell will start for Binghamton against Fisher Cat starter RHP Ryan Tepera. First pitch is scheduled for 1:05 PM.
