LAST GAME: The B-Mets started off 2013 on the right foot, defeating Akron 2-1. Rafael Montero shined on the mound; throwing 5.2 innings and giving up just one run to earn the win. He also struck out eight without walking a single batter. Offensively, the B-Mets scored first on a bases loaded groundout by Wilfredo Tovar in the fifth inning. In the sixth, Josh Rodriguez hit a solo home run over the centerfield wall for the eventual game-winning run. Akron pushed across their only run of the game in the bottom half of the sixth on a single by Jose Ramirez, but the combination of Adam Kolarek and. Jeff Walters finished the job. Walters recorded a six-out save in his AA debut to give the B-Met’s their first victory of the year. In 2012, Walters went 4-4 in save chances with Savannah.
BINGHAMTON STARTING PITCHER: RHP Cory Mazzoni will make his 15th career start with Binghamton. Last season he was promoted up to AA last season from St. Lucie in early June after going 5-1 in 12 starts. He went 5-5 for the B-Mets in the second half of 2012. His only appearance against Akron came in his Eastern League debut. He got the win throwing all seven innings in game two of a double-header. Mazzoni gave up one unearned run on only five hits. He was ranked #10 prospect in the Mets organization by Baseball America prior to the 2013 season. He was selected by the Mets in the 2nd round of the 2011 draft out of North Carolina State University.
AKRON STARTING PITCHER: LHP T.J. House will be making his 24th start with the Akron Aeros. After starting four games for Carolina to begin 2012, he was promoted to Akron for the remainder of the season. In 124.1 innings pitched, he compiled an 8-5 record with a 3.98 ERA. In three starts against the B-Mets in 2012, he went 1-0 with a 2.25 ERA in 16.0 innings pitched. His lone victory was a seven inning, complete game shutout in the first game of a double-header on 6/20. It was he second complete game of his professional career.
MONTERO STRIKES OUT EIGHT: Rafael Montero cruised last night through 5.2 innings by striking out eight Akron Aeros, and at one point retired 15 straight hitters. A B-Met pitcher struck out eight or more hitters only 14 times in 2012. In his Minor League career, Montero has tallied eight or more strikeouts only four other times.
RODRIGUEZ GOES DEEP: Last night Josh Rodriguez hit the first home run of 2013 in the sixth inning , a solo shot off of Cole Cook. Rodriguez is the first B-Met to hit a home run on Opening Day since Lucas Duda back in 2010. This is Rodriguez’s 65th career Minor League home run, and his sixth as a Binghamton Met.
ONE-RUN GAMES: Last night’s 2-1 victory was the first of many close games the B-Mets will likely play in 2013. Last season Binghamton went 19-19 in one-run games. Of the 14 games against Akron in 2012, the B-Mets finished 2-3 in one-run games against the Aeros.
STRUGGLES WITH RISP: Last night the B-Mets went 1-9 with runners in scoring position. Juan Centeno got the only base hit; a single off of Danny Salazar which loaded the bases in the top of the sixth inning. On the night, Binghamton stranded six runners.
LEADING OFF: In last night’s victory, the leadoff hitter reached base in four different innings. None of these base-runners ended up scoring. Rhyne Hughes was retired on a double-play in the second, Cesar Puello was stranded on third base in the third and retired on a double-play in the seventh, and Alonzo Harris was stranded at second in the eighth.
NEXT GAME PREVIEW: Binghamton faces Akron 13 more times this season, seven of which come at Canal Park. The B-Mets continue this four-game series against the Aeros tomorrow afternoon at 2:05 PM. RHP Logan Verrett (0-0, —-) will start for the B-Mets against LHP Matt Packer (0-0, —-).
