BINGHAMTON STARTING PITCHER: RHP Tyler Pill will be making Double-A debut. Last year he began the season with Savannah, but was promoted to St. Lucie near the end of May. He finished the year in St. Lucie, finishing 6-1 with a 2.05 ERA in 11 games (10 starts). Between the two levels, Tyler combined to strike out 105 hitters and only walk 22. Prior to the 2013 season, Pill was ranked the #25 prospect in the Mets organization by Baseball America. He was drafted by the Mets in the fourth round of the 2011 draft out of Cal State Fullerton.
AKRON STARTING PITCHER: RHP Paolo Espino is a very experienced player in the Eastern League. While playing in the Cleveland farm system, Espino has made a stop in Akron in every year since 2009. He has a combined 22-8 record on the mound in Double-A. In 2012, he spent the majority of the season with the Aeros. In 20 starts, he went 7-3 with a 3.09 ERA. He shows excellent control; for his career he has a 3.13 K/BB ratio. Espino has been promoted to Triple-A Columbus in each of the past three seasons, but is starting 2013 in Akron. He was drafted in the 10th round by the Indians in 2006 out of The Pendleton School.
A PERFECT START: The B-Met’s 3-0 record to start 2013 is the best start in franchise history since 2000, where they began the year 5-0. In that year the team finished 82-58, which was tops in the Eastern League. In the post-season however, they were bounced in the first round by the eventual champion New Haven Ravens (currently the New Hampshire Fisher Cats).
STREAKS AND SWEEPS: In 2012, the B-Mets put together winning streaks of at least three games on six different occasions. The longest winning streak was four games, done three different times. With a win Sunday, they will match that.
SWEEP OPPORTUNITY: A victory on Sunday would give the B-Mets their first series sweep of the year. Last season, their only series sweep came against the Portland Sea Dogs in a four-game series from 4/19 to 4/22. On the other hand, Binghamton was swept by their opponent three different times in 2012.
STARTER’S SUCCESS: Through the first three games, each starting B-Met pitcher has thrown at least 5.0 innings and given up no more than three earned runs. Logan Verrett went 6+ innings in yesterday’s victory.
BULLPEN WORK: Quincy Latimore’s two-run home run off of Adrian Rosario in the ninth inning of yesterday’s 7-5 win was the first time that any B-Met relief pitcher had given up a run this season. Binghamton’s bullpen had thrown 9.1 innings before allowing their first run in 2013.
NEXT GAME PREVIEW: Binghamton continues their first roadtrip of 2013 against the Erie Seawolves. Game one of the series is scheduled for 6:35 at Jerry Uht Park in Erie, PA. RHP Erik Goeddel will make his Double-A debut on the mound against RHP Victor Larez. The B-Mets are scheduled to play the Sea Wolves 13 times in 2013.
