Quick Thoughts on Opening Day

The 2013 season couldn't have started any better.

The New York Mets trounced the San Diego Padres 11-2 in a total team effort. This is exactly the way the Mets need to win games this year. Every player is going to have to contribute to compete in this division.

Golden Sombrero

The only real blemish to Monday's opener was Ike Davis going 0-5 with 4 strikeouts all against right handed pitching. Davis wasn't really needed to pull out the win, but blowouts like this are few and far in between and he will be counted on to really produce this season.

So Niese

Jonathon Niese put up a nice Opening Day performance. 6 2/3 with 4 strikeouts. It was interesting seeing Niese argue with Terry Collins to go back for one more inning. The game was out of hand at that point and there was no need for him to be out there, but it was nice to see both player and coach come to an agreement of 100 pitches. Niese acted the part of an ace today and had a quality performance.

It Takes 2's

Six Mets had two-hit performances, including Niese. It was nice to see Ruben Tejada perform at the plate after a putrid spring and John Buck added a walk to his 2-4 day. Again, this was a total team effort. There was contribution from just about everyone in the lineup.

Strain and Gain

David Wright and Daniel Murphy showed no ill effects from their intercostal strains. Murphy contributed two hits and Wright showed some speed on the base paths with two stolen bases. He also showed off the leather with a great diving stop to his left side.

You've Come a Long Way

In the first Major League appearance of his 15 year career, Scott Rice had two strikeouts in 9th inning mop up duty. This was maybe the perfect way for Rice to debut and he didn't disappoint. It will be interesting to see what takes place in the bullpen when Shaun Marcum returns from the disabled list.

More Cowgill

Saving the best for last, Colin Cowgill stole the show with an Opening Day Grand Slam. The last Met to accomplish the feat was Todd Hundley in 1995. He has some pop at the plate and will be an exciting leadoff option going forward. It won't be long until Cowgill becomes a real fan favorite at Citi Field.
