“NY Mets Series Review: Miami Marlins”
The NY Mets welcomed the Miami Marlins to Citi Field this past weekend and took the series 2-1. This particular series had some drama and tight victories but regardless, left us with some good memories. In the first game to open this series, it was Sanabia facing Hefner when it came to pitching and while both pitchers had solid starts, it was our bullpen that let this game get taken away from us. Hefner only gave up a run and a single HR shot by Dobbs. While he did give up 5 hits, I felt he did a decent job holding them to just one run.
At the top of the 7th inning, Hefner was relieved by Burke. This was now the true test of our bullpen and unfortunately, the bullpen horribly failed. It what was a 5 run, 3 hit inning and it’s what helped the Marlins seal the win. Atchison was able to stop the bleeding and got the Mets past the Marlins hitting frenzy but the damage was already done. Despite some strong efforts by Nieuwenhuis and Duda, it wasn’t enough to rally. Had our bullpen came through to keep the game just within a run, we could have taken this one. We lost 7-5.
The second game of this series had a whole different energy to it. The Mets came out more focused behind the pitching of Niese, who was the starter for this game going up against Nolasco. At the bottom of the 7th inning, everything opened up for the Mets. Murphy, Wright, and Buck all had great at-bats. Especially Buck who has been on fire behind the plate both defensively and offensively. He drove in four runs in this game and it sealed another Mets victory this season. Baxter was also impressive as he was given the leadoff spot in the lineup as well as starting for our outfield at right. He was very productive with a single, two walks, a stolen base, and two runs scored. We won 7-3.
The final game in this three game set saw the pitching duel of Laffey vs. Fernandez. The Mets saw trouble early on as the Marlins had some hot bats and were up 3-0. As the game progressed, Recker wrecked a double to left to open this game up with a run scored to start rallying a comeback. Murphy hit a HR and next thing you know we’re only down by a single run. Byrd has been such a great acquisition to the Mets and boy, has he made a statement for himself so far. With the game on the line, about to lose our first series as a team in our home stadium, Byrd answered the challenge by hitting a single to enable Tejada and Nieuwenhuis to bring home the tying and winning run! The entire dugout ran onto the field and it was one of those moments you just had to be there in person to witness. Mets win 4-3 and take a second straight series victory.
One thing I’ve notice but am not too concerned about are the hitting of Wright and Davis. Don’t be too concerned with their bats as all that matters is we’re winning games. Some might say they’re in a hitting slump but when it matters most with games on the line, they come through in the clutch. Our outfield has seen a good chunk of names keep going into and out of that lineup and it’s always good to see the scoring production continues to keep coming. One thing I love about Terry Collins is his mixing and matching to get the most out of his players based on pitching matchups.
We have another series ahead of us in yet another NL East Rival, the Philadelphia Phillies. What’s coming up Monday night will be an absolute terrific night of baseball to watch regardless of your allegiance to your respective major league team. It’s going to be a pitching gem as Holiday takes on Harvey in the first game to open the series up on Monday night. Then you’ll have Gee against Lee the following night and to end the series, Hefner takes on Kendrick. All games are at 7:05pm so make sure to tune in to root for our Mets!
