Binghamton 6 - New Britain 3

B-Mets Bust Out Lumber in Hardware City, 6-3

NEW BRITAIN, CT – The Binghamton Mets racked up eleven hits, including five for extra-bases, and starter Logan Verrett matched a career-high with ten strikeouts in a 6-3 win over the New Britain Rock Cats on Monday night at New Britain Stadium. The B-Mets earned their seventh win in eight games and moved into a tie for first in the Eastern Division.

Binghamton wasted little time jumping on New Britain starter Pat Dean. After Josh Rodriguez singled with one out in the first, Cesar Puello put Binghamton on the board by smoking an RBI double to the right-field alley. Allan Dykstra followed by blasting a 2-1 pitch to right for his third homer of the season.

The offense spilled into the second for the B-Mets. Danny Muno stroked a two-out single to center and Rodriguez gave Binghamton a four-run lead by zipping a run-scoring double to right-center field.

Dean settled down and retired eight straight before the B-Mets burned him with a pair of extra-base hits in the fifth. Rodriguez started the push with a walk and Puello set the table with a two-bagger to right center. Dykstra brought them both home and capped his four-RBI day with a double to left.

Logan Verrett made the lead stand over his six innings of work. The righty surrendered two hits in the first, but got help from his defense to post a scoreless frame. With two aboard, shortstop Danny Muno made a leaping grab on a hard-hit line drive to steal a run-scoring hit from Josmil Pinto.

Verrett struck out nine through five innings and allowed only one run on a solo homer by Deibinson Romero. Verrett stumbled in the sixth and allowed two runs on four hits, but battled to finish the inning. He capped his night by striking out Curt Smith, stranding two runners.

Adam Kolarek posted two scoreless innings of relief and Jeff Walters added a shutout ninth to earn his league-leading 12th save of the season.

Verrett (6-1) allowed three runs on nine hits and issued no walks to become the first Eastern League pitcher to win six games in 2013. Dean (1-5) was tagged for six runs on eight hits over five frames in the losing effort.

The B-Mets (25-19) continue their four-game series against the Rock Cats (20-24) Tuesday night at 6:35 PM. RHP Jacob deGrom gets the ball for Binghamton against RHP Trevor May. The Horizons Federal Credit Union Pregame Show begins at 6:20 PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.
