 Monday, May 20, 2013  Game #45  Away Game #24
New Britain Stadium  New Britain, CT  6:35 PM

LAST GAME: Joe Bonfe had four hits, including a go-ahead two-run single in the sixth inning, to lead the B-Mets past Portland, 8-5 Sundayafternoon. Cory Vaughn started the scoring in the first inning with an RBI single off Portland starter Drake Britton. Binghamton made it 3-0 with an RBI single from Bonfe and an RBI double by Danny Muno. Portland evened the score with a three-run third inning against Cory Mazzoni. They then took the lead in the fifth inning, when Mazzoni threw a wild pitch. In the sixth, Bonfe struck again with a two-run single into left field that gave Binghamton a 6-4 lead. In the seventh, John Church escaped a big jam; he struck out two straight batters with the tying run on base. After tossing a scoreless eighth, he handed the ball to Jack Leathersich. The lefty was cushioned by two more B-Met runs in the top of the ninth, before throwing a scoreless bottom half to log his second save of the year. The only baserunner he allowed in the final inning reached on a fielding error.

BINGHAMTON STARTING PITCHER: RHP Logan Verrett makes his ninth start of the season for the B-Mets. The righty got a no-decision in his last start, 5/14 v AKR, where he allowed three runs and five hits over seven innings on the mound. He settled down after a rough first two innings, and finished his night retiring 16 of his final 18 batters. The B-Mets are 6-2 in Verrett’s starts, and have given him 6.0 runs of support per game. Through eight starts, Verrett led the EL in innings (54.1), and now ranks third. He has allowed one home run in eight of his nine starts. Logan has pitched into the seventh inning five times in 2013.

NEW BRITAIN STARTING PITCHER: LHP Pat Dean makes his ninth start of the season. He was roughed up in his last start; he allowed seven runs on six hits in 1.1 innings 5/15 @ BOW. He is 1-4 with a 5.67 ERA, and has struck out 24 batters in 39.2 innings on the mound. His last start was his shortest of the season; Dean has gone at least 6.0 innings in four starts. He was drafted in the third round of the 2010 draft by the Twins out of Boston College.

ON THE BOARD EARLY: Cory Vaughn’s RBI single in the top of the first inning on Sunday was the third consecutive game the B-Mets had plated a run in the first inning. In 2013, Binghamton has scored in the first inning in 15 of their 43 games. In those innings, they have scored 28 runs. The B-Mets are 14-8 in games where they score first. They are 10-11 when the opponent scores first.

SERIES VICTORY: The 8-5 win on Sunday gave the B-Mets the series victory over the Portland Series. They have won two straight series, and have an overall series record of 5-4-3 in 2013. They have not lost a series since losing two-of-three to the Trenton Thunder 5/7 - 5/10.

HOMERLESS DROUGHT: The B-Mets did not hit a home run in any game during the Portland series. That was the second series this season where opponents held Binghamton without a long ball. Their last home run was Cory Vaughn’s grand slam 5/15 v AKR.

AGAINST THE ROCK CATS: Monday will be the first meeting of the season between the B-Mets and Rock Cats. They are the seventh opponent Binghamton has faced in 2013, and they are scheduled to play 11 times this year. The first two series of the season will be played at New Britain, and the final series will be played at NYSEG Stadium from 8/16 - 8/18. In 2012, the B-Mets went 6-7 against New Britain.

HOT BATS: On Sunday, the B-Mets matched a season high with 14 hits. This was the third time this year they have hit that mark. The offense has collected at least 10 base hits in five of the last seven games. They are 6-1 during that stretch, and are 7-3 in their last 10.

NEXT GAME PREVIEW: The B-Mets continue their series against the Rock Cats Tuesday night. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 PM. RHP Jacob deGrom gets the ball for Binghamton, and he will match up against RHP Trevor May.
