Mack Ade – Morning Report – 5-25-13

"I could throw harder if I wanted, why? When in a jam, many pitchers...try to throw harder. Me, I try to locate better." - Greg Maddux

I read Herb G’s game breakout yesterday morning and couldn’t help but notice three players that stood out.

RHSP Robert Gsellman (2011 – 11th round – Westchester (CA) HS) pitched another gem of a game for Savannah. He now has five starts this year between St. Lucie and Savannah and is a combined 3-1, 2.42, 26.0-IP, 11-K, 9-BB. Just what we needed was another 6-4 righty, right? He obviously has to work on his control a little, but that’s what he does for a living. For now, this is a pleasant added surprise in an organization filled with mid to lower level pitching talent.

RHSP Jenrry Mejia (23-yrs old) was outstanding in his second outing (rehab?) for St. Lucie. The important stat here is the eight strikeouts he had in five innings, giving him 14 in 8.0-IP. Mejia should be pitching either in Queens or AAA, so don’t get too excited about these numbers, but still, it’s a great start from a guy we all have basically given up on. He’s young enough to ‘start over’, pitch St. Lucie and Binghamton this year, and go to camp next spring competing for a slot in the 2014 Mets rotation.

And here comes 1B Aderlin Rodriquez (2-5, HR, 4-RBI, 2-R). A-Rod is a big-time streak hitter that always seems to end the season one of the home run leaders of the league he is playing in for the season. This is a repeat of Lucy, so expected a dominant start from him, which just didn’t happen (April: .186); however, he seems back on track now, going .325/.357/.600/.957, 3-HR, 11-RBI in his last 10 games. He’s also consistently playing first base (along with third) this season, but still leads the team in errors (7-E in 44-G). Lastly, he’s still only 21-years old so my guess is they will keep him in Florida so they can work with him defensively on first base. ETA – 2016

It's interesting to see how much minor league information ha been added to the new one hour pre-game show on SNY. You have no idea how hard it is to come up with 1000 words every day about this team, no less one hour worth of programming. BTW, have you noticed there is far less Bobby V on the set lately. Word is he was starting to sound like he knew more about... err... never mind.

Susana ‏@SusiMJK - @JohnMackinAde Mack, can you do a post where you build a roster based on the first round picks you had the Mets possibly choosing?

              Cute idea…

First of all, I’m going to have to make the assumption that the Mets will draft a college junior. If they go high school, I will throw my hands up and probably retire from this. So, based on that:

1B – D.J. Peterson – New Mexico – He probably will be long gone at #11, but, if he isn’t, you have to consider him. He is one of the two top bats in the draft (Kris Bryant) and the other guy will go I nthe top three picks.

2B – JaCoby Jones – LSU – Jones also plays in the outfield and does it all well. Not spectacular, but well. Only should be picked at #48 though.

SS – Tim Anderson – East Central CC - Strangely, we still haven’t developed an alternative to Ruben Tejada. Anderson is a little bit of a stretch at #11 and fits better at #48.

3B – Eric Jagielo – Notre Dame - Bryant and Collin Moran will be long gone. You want someone you can convert to the outfield and Jagielo already occasionally plays there.

OF – Austin Wilson – UCLA – he’s been my numero uno pick from the get-go and I’m sticking to my guns. This year’s Courtney Hawkins.

OF – Phillip Ervin – Samford – Mu guess is both he and Wilson will be around at #11 and Sandy will have to make this decision. Ervin’s bat is a little better than Wilson, but Wilson’s total game is better.

OF – Aaron Judge – Fresno State – speaking of big time bats, this is one of them. He also should be around at #11, so you make the call.

C – Jonathan Denney – Yukon (OK) HS – this is the only position I would go HS. Don’t need to go college right now. Too much current depth in the system and another mid-level catcher in the system would get in the way.

RHSP – Ryne Stanek – Arkansas – I know the team needs outfielders, but this guy is going to available at #11 and it’s going to be real hard to pass him by.

LHSP – Kent Emanuel – UNC – really a 2nd round pick… all the first round lefties are high school pitchers.

  1. Mack I could be wrong, but I think she was referring to the first round picks from years past that the mets passed up on, a la Yasmani Grandal, Courtney Hawkins, etc. back as far as you remember to field the 2013 version of the Mets based on your proposed selections.

Is that what you were asking Susana?

  2. "The Closer", yes, that's what I meant, lol. However, this was pretty cool too.

But what I was interested in seeing was a roster with the players Mack had the Mets picking/wanted them to pick.
