Mets Draft Target - RHP - Bobby Wahl

Bobby Wahl's story so far in this draft has been typical of many players that start out early on a favorite in the mock drafts.

The University of Mississippi junior started out the mock season as the second ranked RHP in the draft, behind Stanford's Mark Appel.

And basically, he's has almost a perfect season: 15-starts, 9-0, 1.99...  and yet, now he's projected to go somewhere between the 30th and 60th pick in the draft.

Sometimes it just doesn't pay to be popular early and the high school stats take over the mock drafts as the 'season' goes on.

  •  Wahl is a big, physical right-hander with solid present stuff and a chance to find a place in the middle of a rotation at the next level. The undisputed ace of the Ole Miss staff, he generates good arm speed and throws a heavy fastball that sits anywhere from 92-93 and has touched the mid-90s at times. His slider is his best secondary pitch in the 82-84 range and it shows good potential to be an out pitch as he moves forward. His change-up is solid average or better and helps him round out an impressive three-pitch mix. In 2012, Wahl had a 2.55 ERA and 104 strikeouts in 95 innings of work against strong competition in the SEC. He repeats his motion well, but there's some effort involved. Regardless, there's a lot to like about Wahl and he seems to be a fairly safe bet as a college arm with some intriguing stuff.  MLB Comparison: Tim Hudson - LINK

  •  Bobby Wahl may be somewhat of the forgotten man in this year’s college pitching crop. He doesn’t have quite the name recognition of a Mark Appel or Sean Manaea, and his fastball is just shy of Jonathon Crawford’s blistering 97-98 mph heat. But, perhaps it’s about time that changed. Wahl’s pitchability stacks up with any pitcher in the class, and he has the raw stuff to stack up with almost anyone in the class, including a fastball that reaches 96 mph. On top of that, he has the quality track record that’s very difficult to punch any holes in. Like many elite arms at top quality college programs, Wahl has been on the scouting scene for quite some time. Before even arriving at Ole Miss, Wahl was a sought-after high school arm. Back then he was a long, projectable right-handed arm that pitched at 88-93 mph with his fastball. The thought amongst most scouts is that while he could turn pro right away, he also could benefit greatly from three years of pitching in the SEC. He ended up being selected in the 39th round by the Cleveland Indians in the 2010 MLB Draft, and from that point forward it was clear that he would indeed end up pitching for the Rebels. LINK

  • Mack - Wahl is most probably going to be available for the Mets 2nd pick, maybe even their next one. It's crazy that he has fallen this far. This guy has Matt Harvey type potential. Take the guy at #48 and pay him what he's worth. He could be in Queens in 2015.
