New Britain 9 - Binghamton 3

B-Mets Strand Baker’s Dozen in 9-3 Loss

NEW BRITAIN, CT – The Binghamton Mets pounded out 13 hits and walked eight times, but mustered just three runs in a 9-3 loss to the New Britain Rock Cats on Tuesday night at New Britain Stadium. The B-Mets bounced into three double plays, had two runners nabbed on the bases and stranded a season-high 13 runners.

Binghamton’s first inning proved to be the lone highlight Their red-hot offense continued its attack against New Britain starter Trevor May in the first. After an infield single by Josh Rodriguez, Cesar Puello blistered an 0-2 pitch to center field for his team-leading sixth home run of the season.

The B-Mets threatened to add to their lead, but failed to deliver the knock-out blow. May allowed six more hits and walked five after Puello’s home run but kept the B-Mets off the board. The righty stranded eight runners during his five frames.

The Rock Cats took their shot in the third against B-Met starter Jacob deGrom. New Britain grabbed the lead by plating three runs on five hits. James Beresford provided an RBI single, Josmil Pinto tied the game with a single to right and Daniel Ortiz bounced a go-ahead run-scoring double off the right-field wall.

New Britain stretched their lead to five with a two-out rally in the fifth. deGrom got the first two outs, but walked Deibinson Romero and surrendered a double to Pinto. An intentional walk to load the bases came back to bite the righty when he issued back-to-back free passes, forcing in two runs.

Shawn Teufel took over and immediately surrendered a two-run double to Dan Rohlfing. Romero continued the offensive attack with a two-run homer in the sixth, his second blast of the series.
May (3-2) exited after five innings. The righty allowed eight hits and walked a season-high five batters, but surrendered just two runs in the winning effort. deGrom (1-5) was tagged for seven runs on eight hits and four walks over 4-2/3 innings of work in the losing effort.

Blake Martin posted two scoreless innings of relief after taking over from May and Bruce Pugh allowed one run on an RBI single by Rodriguez in his two frames of work.

The B-Mets (25-20) continue their series against the Rock Cats (21-24) Wednesday night at 6:35 PM. RHP Erik Goeddel takes the hill against RHP Alex Meyer. The Horizons Federal Credit Union Pregame Show begins at 6:20 PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.

POSTGAME NOTES: Binghamton collected at least 10 hits for the third straight game…Allan Dykstra reached safely four times on two walks and two hits and raised his team-leading on-base percentage to .436…there were no perfect innings for either team
