B-Mets Take Ninth Straight Series with 7-2 Win
BINGHAMTON, NY – Noah Syndergaard struck out seven in his Double-A debut, and the offense backed him up with four home runs as the Binghamton Mets beat the Erie SeaWolves, 7-2 Sunday afternoon at NYSEG Stadium.
The win gives Binghamton their ninth consecutive series victory, and their eighth straight rubber match win.
Cesar Puello wasted little time in getting ahead of Erie starter Matt Crouse. With two outs in the bottom of the first, Puello launched a solo home run down the left field line to put the B-Mets up 1-0. The home run was Puello’s 14th of the season, tying him for the league lead. Richard Lucas hit the second long ball of the day, an opposite-field shot to lead off the second inning to put Binghamton on top 2-0.
In the third inning, Erie tied the game with two runs against Syndergaard. Luis Castillo tripled down the right field line to start the frame, and he came home to score when Marcus Lemon singled into left field. One batter later, Jamie Johnson tied the game with a double.
That inning tied the game, 2-2 but the tie did not last long. In the bottom half, Allan Dykstra gave the B-Mets a 3-2 by tapping a single into left field. It became 4-2 later in the inning when Crouse threw a wild pitch allowing Peullo to score. Rhyne Hughes joined the scoring effort with his second home run in as many games. It was a solo shot to right-centerfield in the bottom of the fourth to pad the B-Met lead.
The 5-2 advantage was plenty for Syndergaard to work with. He finished his Double-A debut after 6.0 innings and allowed two runs on five hits. He struck out seven, and retired the final four batters he faced. Before he turned things over to the bullpen, Richard Lucas gave the B-Mets a four-run lead with his second home run of the day.
Adam Kolarek came into the game in the seventh and shut down the SeaWolves for two innings. He retired all six batters he faced, and racked up two strikeouts in the process.
In the bottom of the eighth, Binghamton scored their final insurance run of the game. With runners on second and third base, Hughes hit a fly ball to the warning track that scored Dysktra for a sacrifice fly.
John Church struck the side in the ninth to secure the win, as Binghamton clinched the series victory. Syndergaard (1-0) earned his first Double-A win of his career, and Crouse (4-6) was tagged with the loss after allowing five runs in 5.0 innings.
The B-Mets (46-28) now hit the road for a three-game series against the Portland Sea Dogs. First pitch on Monday night is scheduled for 7:00 PM as RHP Erik Goeddel pitches for Binghamton against RHP Anthony Ranaudo for Portland.
