Offense Rolls in Rubber Game, 7-2
MANCHESTER, NH – The Binghamton Mets used a 13-hit attack to blow past the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, 7-2, on Sunday afternoon at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium. The B-Mets took the lead with five runs in the fifth inning and never looked back en route to their league-leading 33rd win of the season.
The Fisher Cats broke the scoreless game in the fourth. Clint Robinson started the inning by banging a double off the left-field wall. He moved to third on a sac bunt and scored on Adam Loewen’s single to left.
New Hampshire’s lead did not last for long. After being kept off the scoreboard for four innings against starter Sean Nolin, the B-Mets broke through with a big inning in the fifth. With two runners aboard, Danny Muno tied the game by shooting a single to right-center.
Following a fly out by Josh Rodriguez, the B-Mets offense kicked into gear with two outs. Cesar Puello gave Binghamton the lead with an RBI, bloop double to left center. With first base open, the Fisher Cats opted to intentionally walk Cory Vaughn to load the bases. The plan backfired as Darrell Ceciliani followed with a three-run triple to the left field corner. The three-bagger, his team-leading fourth of the season, gave the B-Mets a 5-1 lead.
deGrom settled down after allowing his first run in the fourth. The righty fired six straight before surrendering a solo home run to Robinson in the sixth. He saw his day come to an end when he walked the next batter, Kevin Nolan. With Binghamton nursing a three-run lead, Adam Kolarek entered and retired both batters he faced to end the frame. The southpaw returned to post a perfect seventh.
The fifth inning proved to be Nolin’s last. The lefty exited after allowing five runs on ten hits, the most he has allowed as a Fisher Cat. Dustin Antolin tossed a perfect sixth before giving up a solo home run to Puello in the seventh. Binghamton tacked on a run on a triple from Richard Lucas and a wild pitch by reliever Scott Gracey in the eighth.
Jack Leathersich tossed a perfect eighth and Jeff Walters worked around a pair of singles in a shutout ninth. Binghamton’s shutout bullpen effort made a winner of deGrom (2-5) for the second time this season. He allowed two runs on four hits over 5-1/3 innings. Nolin (2-1) suffered his first regular season loss in the Minor Leagues since August 2011.
The B-Mets (33-24) enjoy an off day on Monday before starting a three-game series against the Trenton Thunder on Tuesday night at NYSEG Stadium at 6:35 PM. POSTGAME NOTES: The Binghamton Mets are nine games over .500 for the first time since July 5, 2008 (48-39)…the B-Mets have collected 10 hits or more in 13 of their last 21 games and have gone 15-6 during the stretch…the B-Mets have won three consecutive series…Binghamton’s bullpen has not allowed a run in their last 12-1/3 innings spanning five games
