Mack Ade – Morning Report – 6-6-13

OF Cesar Puello hit his 10th home run last night for AA-Binghamton. I talked to a scout-friend of mine that covers that league and the word is he has finally put together the kind of season he was projected to someday do when originally signed. What worries many is the fact that he probably will receive a 50-game suspension before the season is over.

This mass Biogenesis suspension is going to rock baseball.

Q and A from William James

Hey Mack. Hope all is well! I have been following the draft and IMO the pitching options that would be available would be a poor choice so I think we should stick with hitting. Stank is a huge question mark with control issues, Manea is an expensive injury. Peterson looks to be the best of the bunch if you want a quick riser, Dominic Smith is interesting. You would have to go with Clint Frazier or Meadows if they get to you. What are your thoughts? You're on the clock!

First, great hearing from you. I got a bunch of pre-draft posting up before Thursday 6pm so keep coming back to the site.
Of course, everything I say here is opinion.
I used to get excited about Mets drafts and then Nathan Vineyard came along…
I don’t agree with you about RHPs and neither does most of the experts. This draft is deep in first round talent and prospect RHPs through the second round. I like, and believe that Ryne Stanek will be available. He’s not a power Harvey type. More like a Maddox. Chris Anderson throws a little harder and a particular favorite of mine which some might think is a stretch at #11 is Bobby Wahl. I’d like the Mets to keep building the power pitcher template.
I would steer clear of Manaea. His head’s a mess and his injury is still a mystery.
I like Peterson a lot and he’s probably going to be the best bat available at #11; however, I go against everything I have said (no high school picks at #11) if Meadows was still on the board. He’s a legend around these parts and he and Frazier have a lot of comparisons to a guy named Harper.

Secondly, It's my opinion if the Mets sign a healthy Garza, Pence and Choo they will be contenders. All are possible and it seems like we will not lose our first round pick and we won’t give up anything either, thoughts?

Here’s the problem… all three are marginal superstars but have agents that will demand $20mil+ per season for multiple years. Plus, you can’t guarantee Garza will ever be 100% again.
That being said, I would sign Choo and Garza and expand on the international scouting.
No, I don’t think they are worth it, but, if I have the kind of money it looks like there will available, and I look down my bench and see what I have now, I need Choo in the outfield and Garza to fill out the rotation.
Yeah I know… I give Garza three years at $20mil per and then Syndergaard or Tapia turns out to be a stone cold starter. What do I do now?
These are the kind of problems I would love to have.

From the Mets… “Players of the Month”
                Las Vegas – Gonzalez Germen/pitcher – Eric Campbell/hitter – Kirk                                                  Nieuwenhuis/defense
                Binghamton – Jack Leathersich/pitcher – Josh Rodriguez/hitter – Wilfredo Tovar/defense
                St. Lucie – Matt Bowman/pitcher – Travis Taijeron/hitter – Dustin Lawley/defense
                Savannah – Rainy Lara/pitcher – Jayce Boyd/hitter – Stephen Sabol/defense

Player Focus – AA – SP – Mark Cohoon This is an interesting study. Mark was an unheralded 12th round pick in 2008 out of North Central Texas College. He made his mark both in Brooklyn (2009: 14-starts, 9-2, 2.15, 0.97) and Savannah (2010: 13-starts, 7-1, 1.30, 0.94). The Mets rewarded Cohoon with the kiss of death, a two level jump to Binghamton, where he finished the 2010 season going 5-4, 4.18, 1.25. Since then, he has tried to crack AAA twice, going 4-11, 6.11 in 2011 and (2-games) 0-1, 14.63 last year. Still, he’s 3-2, 3.79 this year and going into Wednesday’s game, his lifetime stats were: 115-G 108-ST, 40-38, 3.75, 1.28. Not the best stats, but doesn’t actually suck, right. So, why is it we never hear a word about him and exactly what the hell are the Mets going to do with him? This is his 6th year in the organization, so he’s welcome to fly at the end of this season. Exactly what did this guy do wrong? Look, if you’re a Mets pitching prospect and you’re reading this and someone calls you in their office and offers you a two level jump, run Forrest, run.

Kiss of Death Update – Cohoon gives up six runs in the first two innings of last night’s game. Oh well…

From Maury Brown
Major League Baseball may seek to suspend as many as 20 players, including Alex Rodriguez and Ryan Braun, as part of the investigation into the Miami-area Biogenesis anti-aging clinic, according to a report by ESPN. The league has been pursuing legal avenues, including a lawsuit against Biogenesis, Biokem, Tony Bosch of Biogenesis, and others, seeking damages. That and other pressure may have finally taken a toll on Bosch as, according to the ESPN report, he is ready to cooperate with MLB investigators in exchange for their dropping the case. With Bosch testifying against players, the league could begin the suspension process “within the next few weeks.” LINK

  1. Mack I don't think any of those guys get 20 mil per season. Choo maybe 18, pence 15 and garza 15 as well. I would go after Beltran (2yr/20mill) leftfield, Pence(4yr/60mil) and Phil hughes( 4yr/48mil). That gives Austin meadows a chance to slowly develop with finding Nimo... I think Hughes will be perfect for citifield and trade duda if u get a chance,

  2. I believe two of those three guys are represented by Bore-ass.

He will 'demand' $20+mil/yr for 3-5 years.

That's what he wil go into the negotiations with and, judging what some of last year's FAs got, he may get it from some teams.

The Mets are just one team out of 30 that might want these guys...
