Early Deficit Dooms B-Mets, 10-6

BINGHAMTON, NY – The Binghamton Mets could not come back from an early deficit as they fell to the Trenton Thunder, 10-6, Wednesday night at NYSEG Stadium.

Mark Cohoon started on the mound for the B-Mets, and the Thunder jumped on him early. The first three batters of the game singled against the lefty, as they set up a bases-loaded situation with nobody out. JR Murphy flied out for the opening out, but Kyle Roller drove in two runs with a single up the middle to put the Thunder on top. Jose Pirela followed with a sacrifice fly and the Thunder took a 3-0 lead into the bottom of the first.

In the second, they doubled the lead with three more runs. Slade Heathcott plated two with a triple into left-centerfield, and Tyler Austin added an RBI single as Trenton quickly led 6-0.

Meanwhile, Mikey O’Brien silenced the Binghamton Mets the first time through the batting order. The righthander retired the first 10 batters of the game before giving up a one-out single to Darrell Ceciliani in the fourth inning. In the fourth, the B-Mets worked the bases loaded but could not push a run across.

Cohoon surrendered two final runs in the top of the fifth, as he uncorked a wild pitch and allowed an RBI double to Reegie Corona to make it an 8-0 Trenton lead.

In the bottom half however, Binghamton found life offensively. With two men on base, Danny Muno hit a hard ground ball up the middle for an RBI single for the first run. After Ceciliani smacked an RBI double into the gap, Cesar Puello brought the team back into the game. He blasted his tenth homer of the season, bringing Binghamton within three runs.

On the very next pitch, Allan Dykstra smoked a home run over the right field wall to bring the B-Mets within two. This was the first time all season Binghamton has hit back-to-back home runs, and it made the score 8-6.

Trenton responded in the top of the seventh inning against the B-Met bullpen. Ryan Fraser walked two batters, and allowed back-to-back run-scoring base hits to boost the Trenton lead to 10-6.

Binghamton only tallied one base hit over the final four innings, as the combination of Francisco Rondon, Graham Stoneburner, and Tommy Kahnle preserved the lead for the Thunder.

Cohoon (3-3) took the loss after giving up eight runs in five innings, while Mikey O’Brien (4-0) earned the win after allowing six runs in five innings.

The loss sets up a rubber match between the B-Mets (34-25) and Thunder (32-27) on Thursday morning. First pitch is set for 10:35 AM as RHP Cory Mazzoni takes the hill for Binghamton against LHP Matt Tracy for Trenton.
