Patience Pays Off in 4-2 Win
BINGHAMTON, NY – Rhyne Hughes drew the first of two consecutive bases-loaded walks for the eventual game-winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning as the Binghamton Mets defeated the Altoona Curve, 4-2 on Tuesday night at NYSEG Stadium.
The inning was extended after a dropped third strike with two outs, and the team scored two runs without a base hit in the frame. The game began on Monday night, but was postponed after five outs were made. On Tuesday, it resumed with two outs and nobody on in the bottom of the first inning.
The Curve got on the board in the top of the third inning against Darin Gorski. Drew Maggi led off the inning with a bunt single, and moved up to third base on a bloop double by Adalberto Santos down the right field line. Gregory Polanco and Alex Dickerson followed with consecutive RBI groundouts, and the Curve took a 2-0 lead.
That score held until the bottom of the fifth, when the B-Met’s broke through against Jameson Taillon. Blake Forsythe hit a line drive over the left-centerfield wall to cut the deficit to 2-1. For Forsythe, it was his first home run since May 28th against the Curve. Two batters later, Wilfredo Tovar looped a single into left field and stole second base. With two outs, Danny Muno tied the game with a bouncing ball up the middle.
Taillon’s night ended after allowing the two runs in the fifth inning. Quenton Miller took the hill in the sixth, and started the frame with a leadoff walk to Allan Dykstra. He followed by striking out the next three batters, but it wasn’t enough to get out of the inning. With two outs, Darrell Ceciliani missed strike three in the dirt, and it made it to the backstop allowing him to reach first base on the dropped third strike rule.
Binghamton took advantage of the break, and scored later scored two runs on back-to-back bases-loaded walks to take a 4-2 lead. The first by Hughes gave Binghamton the lead, and Danny Muno drew the second one to bring in the fourth run. Muno finished the night 3-for-3 with two RBI.
The B-Mets handed things to John Church in the seventh, as Gorski was left in line for the victory. Church went 1-2-3 in the seventh, and Pedro Feliciano followed with a scoreless eighth. They paved the way for closer Jeff Walters, who pitched a perfect ninth to record his league-leading 21st save of the season.
Gorski (2-0) earned the win after throwing five innings of relief. The lefty gave up two runs on five hits in the win. Quenton Miller (1-3) got the loss after giving up the two bases-loaded walks in the sixth. Church and Feliciano each got holds, and Walters earned the save.
Binghamton (51-29) looks for the series sweep over Altoona (36-47) on Wednesday night. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 PM as RHP Cory Mazzoni takes the ball for the B-Mets against RHP David Bromberg for the Curve.
