Good Wings Carry Gnats Past Jackets 1-0 Wednesday
Savannah, GA – Three throws made the difference in the Savannah Sand Gnats 1-0 win over the Augusta GreenJackets Wednesday night at Historic Grayson Stadium. Gnats’ outfielders threw out two runners at home plate to keep the GreenJackets from scoring, while the Gnats scored the game’s only run on a throwing error.
Savannah outfielders ended both the second and third innings by throwing out runners at the plate. In the second, LF Maikis De La Cruz nailed 3B Mitch Delfino, who was trying to score from second on a single into left. In the third, with the bases loaded, RF Eudy Pina threw out LF Andrew Cain, who was attempting to tag up from third on a line drive towards the right field line.
The Gnats (9-10/52-36) scored the game’s only run in the bottom of the third. SS Philip Evans doubled to start the frame. DH Jorge Rivero, playing his first game as a Sand Gnat, then attempted a bunt that pitcher Kendry Flores threw wildly down the left field line in an attempt to get Evans. The errant throw allowed Evans to score on the play. Flores allowed only the one unearned run in his seven innings of work. He yielded four hits, did not walk a batter and struck out six.
Savannah starter Marcos Camarena used the good throws from his defense to work around eight hits and a walk in six and a third scoreless innings in his second start to improve to 4-0 with a 1.50 ERA.
The GreenJackets (8-9/46-40) had runners on base in six of their nine turns at bat but could not push across a run against Camarena or the Gnats’ bullpen of Hunter Carnevale and Paul Sewald who earned his third save for a 1-2-3 ninth with two strikeouts.
Looking for the sweep of their three-game series, the Gnats send RHP Matt Koch (5-3, 4.26) to the mound against RHP Joan Gregorio (4-2, 3.78). Gates at Historic Grayson Stadium open at 6 pm. The radio pregame show begins on News/Talk 630 and online at sandgnats.com at 6:45 pm.
