Lowell 5 - Brooklyn 2
Ty Buttrey tossed five scoreless innings while the Lowell Spinners took advantage of shoddy Brooklyn fielding to take a 5-2 win on a getaway Tuesday afternoon during a rare 11 am start.
The Spinners completed the road trip 3-3, and stayed within reach of Stedler Division leader Tri-City, coming home two games back of the ValleyCats.
Lowell (12-9) used the speed of Tzu-Wei Lin to score the first run of the game, as he drew a leadoff walk and quickly stole second. Lin advanced to third on a fly ball and raced home on a double play groundball hit by Aaron King, as Brooklyn first baseman Alex Sanchez touched first before throwing to second, allowing the run to count.
The Spinners tacked on three runs in the fifth inning. Nick Moore led off with a the team's first hit, a single, and moved to third on a double by Williams Jerez. Back-to-back groundouts by Miguel Rodriguez and Lin scored Moore and Jerez, respectively. Cleuluis Rondon then reached second on a throwing error by Brooklyn third baseman Anthony Chavez and scored on a single to right by Kevin Mager to complete the scoring.
Brooklyn (9-13) scratched a run across in the seventh inning as designated hitter Matt Oberste doubled and moved to third on a single by Sanchez. A single by rightfielder Jorge Rivero scored Oberste, but Taylor Grover was able to work out of any further trouble, inducing a double-play groundball and a harmless groundout to third to end the inning.
Lowell scored a run in the ninth on a fielding error by Cyclone second baseman L.J Mazzilli, as Rodriguez, who had reached on a passed ball on a third strike, raced home from second base while the Cyclones pushed one across in the bottom half of the inning off of Greg Larsen, Lowell's fourth pitcher of the afternoon.
