Schimpf’s Blast Burns B-Mets, 6-5
MANCHESTER, NH – The Binghamton Mets failed to preserve a pair of two-run leads in a 6-5 loss to the New Hampshire Fisher Cats on Friday night at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium. Fisher Cats second baseman Ryan Schimpf launched a go-ahead, three-run homer in the sixth inning and the Fisher Cats never looked back, handing the B-Mets their first road loss in more than two weeks.
The Fisher Cats struck in a flash in the first. With two outs, catcher A.J. Jimenez deposited a pay-off pitch from B-Mets starter Mark Cohoon into the left-field seats, giving the Fisher Cats a one-run advantage.
Binghamton tied the game in the second against Deck McGuire on a bases-loaded run-producing groundout by Blake Forsythe. The visitors grabbed the lead with a crooked number in the third. Rhyne Hughes forced in the go-ahead run with a bases-loaded walk and Travis Taijeron doubled the lead with sacrifice fly to left.
Cohoon made the lead stand for two innings before the Fisher Cats broke through in the fifth. After a hit batsman and a single, Kevin Ahrens laced an RBI single to left-center. Adam Loewen followed with a run-producing fielder’s choice, tying the game at three. Cohoon ended the inning and capped his night by inducing Andy Burns to bounce into an inning-ending double play.
The contest did not stay tied for long. Darrell Ceciliani led off the sixth by blasting a 1-2 pitch from McGuire beyond the right field wall for his third homer of the season. Forsythe made it back-to-back jacks by bouncing another 1-2 pitch off the top of the left-field fence and into the seats. Forysthe’s blast gave the B-Mets a 5-3 advantage and chased McGuire from the game. Scott Gracey took over and ended the inning with three straight outs.
Schimpf washed away the lead and Binghamton’s momentum with one swing of the bat in the bottom of the inning. Facing reliever Ryan Fraser with two on and two outs, Schimpf belted a three-run homer to right. His league-leading 17th round-tripper of the season pushed the Fisher Cats ahead by one.
Trailing for the second time in the game, the B-Mets failed to crack the scoreboard against the Fisher Cats bullpen. Gracey returned for the seventh and worked around a walk and a single to post a scoreless frame. Alan Farina fired a perfect eighth and stranded the tying run on base in the ninth to earn his third save.
Gracey (1-0) fanned two for his first win, while Fraser (0-1) suffered his first blown save. Cohoon struck out five while allowing three runs on three hits over five innings in a no-decision. Chase Huchingson struck out three in two scoreless innings to close Binghamton’s pitching tab.
The B-Mets (52-31) continue their final series before the All-Star Break on Saturday night at 7:05 PM. RHP Noah Syndergaard gets the ball against RHP Ryan Tepera. The Horizon Federal Credit Union Pregame Show begins at 6:50 PM.
