Salt Lake 7 - Las Vegas 1
Matt Shoemaker tossed seven strong innings to lead the Salt Lake Bees to a 7-1 series opening win over the Las Vegas 51s on Monday night. Shoemaker (7-10) allowed just one run on five hits with eight strikeouts and one walk. Jeremy Berg and Daniel Stange each worked one scoreless inning in relief. The Bees grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second on an RBI single by Drew Heid, who was making his first start for Salt Lake since being called up from double-Arkansas. After Las Vegas tied it in the top of the third, the Bees regained the lead in the bottom of the inning, as Kole Calhoun tripled and later scored on a single by Matt Long. Chris Nelson's RBI single in the fourth made it 3-1 and the Bees broke the game open with three runs in the sixth on RBI singles by Nelson, Luis Rodriguez and Long.
Roberto Lopez led the hit parade with two singles and a double, while Nelson and Long each added two hits and two runs batted in. Rodriguez and Heid would each chip in with two hits and one RBI. The Bees drew a season high ten walks from Las Vegas pitching, as they picked up at least one in every inning, but the third and seventh.
