Gorski Tops Bromberg in 1-0 Pitchers Duel

BINGHAMTON, NY – Darin Gorski threw 7.2 shutout innings on the mound as the Binghamton Mets beat the Altoona Curve in a 1-0 pitchers duel on Thursday night at NYSEG Stadium. The win was Binghamton’s 11th shutout win of the season, and the sixth in their last 30 games.

Gorski had all of his pitches working against the Curve, as he threw at least seven innings for the third consecutive start. He scattered four hits and struck out three in 7.2 shutout innings.

Altoona had their scoring chances against Binghamton, but they failed to crack the scoreboard against Gorski. In the second, Adalberto Santos was thrown out trying to steal third base. In the top of the seventh Gregory Polanco tried to steal third, but Travis d’Arnaud threw the runner out once again to avoid the scoring threat.

Their biggest scoring threat against the B-Mets came in the top of the eighth inning. After Gorski retired the first two batters of the inning, he gave up a double to Mel Rojas Jr. and walked pinch hitter Kelson Brown. Ryan Fraser then came from the bullpen in a big jam. His first pitch hit Alen Hanson in the foot, but he forced pinch hitter Justin Howard to fly out to centerfield for the final out of the inning.

Runs were at a premium in this game, and Binghamton got the only run of the game in the bottom of the first inning. Darrell Ceciliani reached on a one-out walk, and advanced to second base on a wild pitch in the dirt. The very next pitch was knocked into right field by Rhyne Hughes, and Ceciliani scored to give the B-Mets a 1-0 lead.

In the ninth inning, Jeff Walters threw a scoreless frame and secured his 33rd save of the season. With the tying run on second base and two outs, Darrell Ceciliani made a diving catch to end the game.

The B-Mets (73-44) took three of four games from the Altoona Curve, and hit the road beginning on Friday to take on the Erie Seawolves at Jerry Uht Park. At 5:05 PM, the two teams will resume a suspended game from April 10. Binghamton has a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. RHP Greg Peavey will be on the mound for the B-Mets when the game resumes, and he will face LHP Matt Crouse for Erie. After the conclusion of the resumed game, the two teams will play a seven-inning game. The Horizons Federal Credit Union Pregame Show starts at 4:50 PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.
