RHP Erik Goeddel (9-6, 4.07) vs. RHP Jason Hammel (0-0, ---)
Thursday, August 29, 2013 • Game #138 • Away Game #70
Prince George’s Stadium • Bowie, MD • 7:05 PM
LAST GAME: The B-Mets pounded out 13 hits and defeated the Bowie Baysox, 7-4 on Wednesday night at Prince George’s Stadium. All nine starters collected at least one base hit in Binghamton’s second straight victory. They took the lead in the second inning with an RBI single from Danny Muno. They scored later in the frame on a wild pitch by Mike Wright. In the third inning, the game was halted for 1:58 due to rain. Hamilton Bennett was on the hill for Binghamton on the other side of the delay. The lefty threw three innings of relief and picked up his first win at the Double-A level. Four different B-Mets collected multiple hit games, and Alonzo Harris had two RBI.
BINGHAMTON STARTER: RHP Erik Goeddel is making his 25th start for the B-Mets and first against Bowie. In his last start he received a no-decision after allowing three runs in six innings against the Akron Aeros. He hasn’t won a start since July 21, and has lost three of his last six starts. In 14 road starts, he is 6-2 with a 4.14 ERA. In 129.1 innings pitched, he has 120 strikeouts and has held opponents to a .254 batting average against. The Mets drafted Goeddel in the 24th round of the 2010 draft out of UCLA.
BOWIE STARTER: RHP Jason Hammel makes an appearance with the Baysox as a Major League rehabber. This will be his first outing on the mound since a loss to the Boston Red Sox on July 28. Since then, he has been on the disabled list with a right arm injury. With Baltimore this season, Hammel is 7-8 with a 5.20 ERA in 21 games started. He has been in the big leagues since 2006 when he broke in with the Tampa Bay Rays. His only time at the Double-A level came in 2005 as a member of the Montgomery Biscuits (TB). That year he went 8-2 with a 2.66 ERA in 12 starts. He was drafted by Tampa Bay in the 10th round of the 2002 draft. He came to Baltimore in a trade from the Colorado Rockies in 2012.
WINNING RECORD: Last night’s win gave Binghamton their franchise-record 84th win of the season. Their previous high was 82 victories, set in 1994, 1998, and 2000. The B-Mets have clinched a playoff spot for the first time since 2004, and clinched the regular season division title for the first time since 2000.
FARM SYSTEM IN POSTSEASON: The B-Mets are not the only Met minor league affiliate bound for the postseason in 2013. Las Vegas (AAA), Brooklyn (SS-A), and Kingsport (R) are all leading their divisions with less than a week to play. The Savannah Sand Gnats (Low-A) won the first half championship, and earned an automatic bid to the postseason.
ALONZO DRIVES IN 2: Alonzo Harris provided his fourth multi-RBI game last night, and his first since June 6th against Trenton. The outfielder has driven in 23 runs in 2013.
ANOTHER SERIES VICTORY: A win on Thursday would give Binghamton their 26th series victory of the season. Their series record is 25-9-7. A win would also give Binghamton a 4-4 record on their final roadtrip of the season.
DOUBLE FIGURE HITS: Binghamton collected 13 base hits in last night’s victory. That was the first time the B-Mets have tallied at least 10 hits in consecutive games since July 23-24 against the Reading Fightin Phils.
AUGUST: The B-Mets have 17 wins in August, which is the most of any team in the league. Their record is 17-10 and have also posted a league-best 2.76 team ERA. Their .230 batting average is the lowest in the league.
LAST ROAD GAME: On the road, Binghamton is a league-best 42-27. Harrisburg has the second-most road victories with 37.
NEXT GAME PREVIEW: Binghamton begins their final regular season series on Friday night. They return back to NYSEG Stadium to take on the New Hampshire Fisher Cats at 7:05 PM. Binghamton will send LHP Darin Gorski to the mound to face RHP Deck McGuire for the Fisher Cats.
