LAST GAME: The B-Mets shut out the Harrisburg Senators, 3-0 in the series opener on Friday night. Greg Peavey took a no-hitter into the sixth and allowed just one runner to reach third base en route to his first win since returning to the B-Mets. Binghamton got on the board right away against Harrisburg starter Taylor Hill. Allan Dykstra singled into right field to score Danny Muno for the first run. In the sixth, Travis Taijeron doubled the lead with an RBI double down the left field line. They scored their final run on a throwing error in the seventh inning. Peavey allowed one hit over six innings before handing the ball to Ryan Fraser. He threw two scoreless innings, and Jeff Walters finished the game with a scoreless ninth inning.
BINGHAMTON PITCHER: RHP Logan Verrett makes his 20th start of the season for the B-Mets, and his first against the Senators. Verrett lost his last start, July 28 against Trenton, where he allowed one run on three hits in five innings. The B-Mets lost that game, After starting the season 8-2, Verrett has lost four of his last five decisions. Logan has allowed 18 home runs this season, which is the second most in the league. His WHIP is 1.11, ranking him second in the league as well. In 121.1 innings pitched, opponents are batting .240 against him.
HARRISBURG PITCHER: RHP Nathan Karns makes his 18th start of the season for the Senators, and his second against the B-Mets. On May 12, he only recorded one out before allowing six runs in a loss. Karns made three starts with the Nationals in late May/ early June, and went 0-1 with a 7.50 ERA. Since coming back to Double-A, Karns is 3-2 in eight starts. He lost his last start at Portland, but matched a season-high with eight innings pitched. He allowed three runs and struck out eight in a game that the Sea Dogs won, 3-2. In 92.1 innings pitched, opponents are only hitting .211 against the righty. He has 110 strikeouts and 38 walks allowed.
SHUT OUT: Greg Peavey, Ryan Fraser, and Jeff Walters combined to throw the ninth shutout by B-Met pitching this season. Nine shutouts are the fourth most in the Eastern League. New Britain (10), Richmond (11), and Harrisburg (12) are the only teams with more shutouts.
SINCE THE LAST TIME THEY MET: Prior to Friday’s game, the last meeting between the B-Mets and Senators was on May 12. On May 13, Binghamton was 19-18 and in fourth place in the Eastern Division. Since then, they are 49-25 and have an 11.5 game lead in the division.
SERIES VICTORY: A win on Saturday or Sunday would give Binghamton their 20th series win of the season. They have a series record of 19-8-6.
INTO THE HISTORY BOOKS: Jeff Walters earned his 31st save of the season on Friday against Harrisburg, adding to his franchise record for most saves in a single season. He passed the record held by Jerrod Riggan, who recorded 28 saves in the 2000 season. The most career saves in Binghamton history is 36, set by Tim Lavigne. Walters is currently tied for second with Eddie Kunz (‘08, ‘10) on that list.
TRYING TO FIND THE BATS: Over their last nine games, Binghamton is hitting .192 (50-for-261) as a team. They are 4-5 during that stretch, and have been held to five hits or fewer in six of those eight games. They are hitting .192 (14-73) with runners in scoring position during that time.
HOMERLESS DROUGHT: As a team, Binghamton has only hit three home runs in their last 14 games. On the season, the B-Mets rank third in the league with 92 round trippers. Allan Dykstra is tied for second in the league with 18 home runs.
NEXT GAME PREVIEW: The B-Mets conclude their three-game series against the Senators on Sunday afternoon. First pitch is set for 2:00 PM as the B-Mets send RHP Noah Syndergaard to the mound against RHP Rob Gilliam for Harrisburg.
