LAST GAME: The Binghamton Mets squandered a four-run lead in the seventh inning and fell to the Erie SeaWolves, 6-4, last night at Jerry Uht Park. Armando Rodriguez surrendered a game-tying three-run homer to James Robbins before allowing two more runs in the eighth in his first loss of the season. Noah Syndergaard struck out five and faced three over the minimum over five shutout innings in the no-decision. Rhyne Hughes put the B-Mets on the board with a solo homer in the second and Danny Muno added a two-run single. Josh Rodriguez’s RBI single in the fifth plated Binghamton’s final run of the game. Will Startup retired all five B-Mets he faced for his fifth win and Melvin Mercedes posted a perfect ninth for his eighth save.
BINGHAMTON STARTER: LHP Mark Cohoon makes his 17th start of the season and third against the Erie SeaWolves. The southpaw tossed the first complete game victory of the season for the B-Mets pitching staff in his most recent start on August 6 against the Altoona Curve. Cohoon allowed one unearned run on four hits over seven innings in Binghamton’s 6-1 victory. Today marks Cohoon’s 62nd career start with the B-Mets, the second-highest total in franchise history (Jose Sanchez, 63). He was selected in the 12th round by the New York Mets in the 2008 draft.
ERIE STARTER: LHP Ramon Garcia makes his fifth start of the season with the SeaWolves and first against the B-Mets. He took a no-decision in his last start against the Trenton Thunder on August 6. He struck out six and allowed two runs on four hits over six innings in Erie’s 3-2 walk-off win. Garcia began the season with the Toledo Mud Hens (AAA), going 3-9 with a 6.39 ERA over 16 appearances (15 starts). Garcia has pitched with the SeaWolves in parts of each of the previous four seasons, making his debut with the club in 2009. Today’s game marks his 47th career start and 112th overall appearance.
ROCKY SEVENTH: The four runs allowed by the B-Mets in the seventh inning last night were the most surrendered in one frame since the New Britain Rock Cats scored five times in the fourth on July 19. It was the most runs allowed in the seventh inning or later since the Richmond Flying Squirrels plated four in the seventh on July 16.
HUGHES TAMES THE WOLVES: Rhyne Hughes led off the second inning with a solo homer last night, his third homer against the SeaWolves this season. In seven games versus Erie, Hughes has hit .409 (9-for-22) with three doubles, a triple, three homers, nine RBI and five runs scored.
RUBBER MATCH: The B-Mets have gone 9-6 in rubber matches this season, most recently dropping the series-deciding game to the Altoona Curve on August 1.
OH, OH IT’S MAGIC: Binghamton’s magic number to clinch a playoff spot sits at 7. Their magic number to secure the Eastern Division remains at 12. The B-Mets have not made the postseason since 2004 nor won a division title since 2000.
AUGUST RESURGENCE: After hitting just .183 in July, B-Mets outfielder Travis Taijeron has batted .323 (10-for-31) in August. The Californian has racked up four doubles and two home runs in nine games. He collected just seven extra-base hits in 21 games in July.
SUNDAY FUNDAY: The B-Mets have gone 15-5 on Sundays this season and are 30-9 on the weekend (Saturday and Sunday) this season.
