LAST GAME: The New Britain Rock Cats scored five runs in the top of the fifth inning leading them to a 5-3 victory in the series finale against the B-Mets on Sunday night at NYSEG Stadium. Binghamton scored first when Travis Taijeron lifted a solo home run in the second inning. New Britain retaliated in the fifth when they plated five runs on five hits. Both Nate Hanson and Reynaldo Rodriguez hit two-run home runs in the frame. Evan Bigley added an RBI single for the final run. Binghamton’s comeback effort came in the bottom of the sixth. Josh Rodriguez drove in a run with an RBI double, and Allan Dysktra brought him home with an RBI single. The B-Mets put the tying run on base in the ninth inning, but fell short after stranding him on base.
BINGHAMTON STARTER: LHP Darin Gorski makes his 11th start of the season for the B-Mets and first against the Baysox. He received a no-decision in his last start, 8/14 at Reading. In the game he allowed a season-high seven hits and gave up three runs. In four games pitched at NYSEG Stadium, Gorski is 3-1 with a 1.95 ERA. In 57.0 innings, opponents are hitting .179 against the southpaw. He spent all of 2012 with the B-Mets, and went 9-8 with 4.00 ERA in 24 starts. He was drafted by the Mets in the seventh round of the 2009 draft out of Kutztown University (PA).
BOWIE STARTER: RHP Devin Jones makes his 22nd start of the season for Bowie and second against Binghamton. On June 16, he allowed four runs in six innings in a no-decision. Binghamton ended up winning that game, 5-4 at NYSEG Stadium. His last was on August 14 against the Erie Seawolves. In the loss, he matched a season-high with eight runs against and gave up a season-high 11 base hits. In nine starts on the road, he is 2-3 with a 4.99 ERA. Since May 24, Jones has only one victory. In 107.0 innings pitched, opponents are hitting .304 against the righty. He was drafted by the Orioles in the ninth round of the 2011 draft out of Mississippi State University.
TICKET PUNCHED: On Saturday, Binghamton clinched their first postseason bid since 2004 with their 5-4 win over New Britain. Their magic number to win the Eastern Division is at 3. Binghamton has not won a division title since 2000. They have two Eastern League championships; they won in 1992 (inaugural season) and in 1994.
TAIJERON FOR EXTRA BASES: Travis Taijeron hit his 12th home run as a B-Met in last night’s loss. It was his 21st combined home run in 2013, as he hit 9 with St. Lucie (High-A) before being promoted in early June. Of his 46 hits as a B-Met, 27 of them have been for extra bases. His 15 doubles during that stretch is tied with Josh Rodriguez for the most on the team. 12 home runs since June 8 ties Allan Dykstra for the most on the team.
X MARKS THE SPOT: Xorge Carrillo went 2-for-4 with a double last night. He has hit safely in five straight games, and in 13 of his last 14. During that time, he is 18-for-45 (.400) with five RBI. Carrillo has served as Binghamton’s backup catcher since being promoted from St. Lucie (High-A) in late May.
AUGUST PITCHING NUMBERS: Despite a .236 team batting average in August, Binghamton is 12-5 during this month. The pitching staff has led the way, posting a league-best 2.36 ERA in the month. The next-best ERA is Harrisburg with a 3.13 mark.
