The Charleston RiverDogs snapped a seven-game losing streak by scoring eight runs in the fourth through sixth innings to defeat the Savannah Sand Gnats 9-7 Wednesday night at Historic Grayson Stadium.
Charleston (23-23/62-52) took the lead for good with a three-run top of the sixth. DH Greg Bird launched a go-ahead two-run home run to right off reliever Tyler Vanderheiden to put the Dogs in front 9-7.
The Sand Gnats (23-19/66-45) had taken a brief 7-6 lead with three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. The key hit in the frame was a two-run single by DH Nelfi Zapata.
Charleston took their first lead at 6-4 with three runs in the top of the fifth off Savannah starter Marcos Camarena. Helped by a walk and two hit-by-pitches, the ‘Dogs scored three runs on just one hit in the inning.
The Gnats built a 4-1 lead with two runs in both the first and second innings. In the second, CF Brandon Nimmo, who finished 3-for-5, doubled home two runs with a flyball double over the head of leftfielder Daniel Aldrich.
The RiverDogs scored first with a run in the top of the first when SS Cito Culver singled into center field, driving home 2B Angelo Gumbs. On the play, Nimmo threw out DH Greg Bird, who was trying to go first to third.
Savannah pitching had not allowed a run in the first 18 games of the series against Charleston.
