Savannah, GA – The Gnats swept a doubleheader from the Greenville Drive by scores of 5-4 and 5-2 Friday night at Historic Grayson Stadium. In both games, the Gnats had to overcome 2-0 deficits.

In game two, Greenville starter Cody Kukuk took a no-hitter, and a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the sixth inning. However, after Dimas Ponce walked, Brandon Nimmo broke up Kukuk’s bid with a double up the right-centerfield gap. With runners at second and third, Maikis De La Cruz doubled into the right field corner to score Ponce and Nimmo and even the game at 2-2. After Dilson Herrera walked, LF Stefan Sabol doubled into right field, scoring De La Cruz. Herrera came home on a throwing error on the play to make the score 4-2. That ended Kukuk’s night. 3B Jeff Reynolds then greeted reliever Manuel Rivera with an RBI single into right to score Sabol.

Savannah starter Steven Matz did not work a single 1-2-3 inning, but nearly finished off six frames. He shutout the Drive (27-38/49-85) through five innings. He finished with 5.2 innings and was charged with two runs, on five hits and three walks, while fanning six. Reliever Wanel Mesa snagged the win for recording the final five outs of the game.

In game one, the Gnats (32-33/75-59) overcame the Drive’s 2-0 lead with a three-run fourth inning keyed by Cole Frenzel’s two-run homerun, his seventh of the year.

The Drive tied the game at 3-3 with a run in the top of the sixth, but the Gnats scored twice in the second to make it 5-3. The recently acquired Herrera singled, stole second, and came home on Frenzel’s RBI double for a 4-3 lead.

Gnats starter Tim Peterson lasted six innings for the win, his first as a Gnat.
