I May Be Wrong, But
If I was Jordany Valdespin's agent I would be on the phone with the Chiba Lotte Marines, or the Nippon Ham Fighters, or any other japanese league team that might show some interest in an epic douchebag of his level. Maybe he could record a rap album with Lastings Milledge over there...he would be the star that he already decided he is.
I'm not at all a fan of Alex Rodriguez, but I can't help but think that the way that mlb is handling this biogenesis case is not right. Who is Bud Selig to declare that if you dare appeal his decision then the penalty becomes more severe? This whole thing is about Selig wanting to be remembered as the commisioner who cleaned up baseball's steroid problem. The same guy who was cheering Mcgwire and Sosa before we knew what was behind it all. There's no way you can convince me that he didn't know about it then, and chose not to address it.
Can you imagine if steroids were as prevelent in the mid eighties as they were in the early 2000's? Those Mets teams from that era were loaded with guys that certainly would not have been opposed to a little competitve advantage....All 25 guys would have been on the juice--Straw would have hit 60 homers, Dykstra would be a 40-40 guy, Dr. K would have be slinging 105 mph fastballs...The might not have ever lost a game.
Why would you allow the manager of you're team to rip into you're 23 year old phenom pitcher through the media? When the Mets hired this 3 headed GM monster back in 2010, these guys were supposed to be the "adults in the room". There would no longer be any stupid decisions like the Mejia bullpen thing or trading you're best pitching prospect for an innings eater type starter, or moving Jose Reyes to second in favor of the Great Kazuo Matsui. These new Mets look and sound alot like the old Mets....
I'm not a huge fan of this six man rotation decsion when Jon Niese comes back....It throws off the rhythm of the staff, and leaves the team an arm short in the bullpen. Just put Hefner in the pen (he's not part of the future rotation anyway). When Harvey and Wheeler reach their innings limits they can put him back in, or call up guys like Gorski/Degrom--they need to make rule five decisions on those guys anyway, and it might be a nice audition.
Regarding Valdespin, he's likely to be cut by the Mets after the end of the suspension but even if he's cut immediately, he can't go to Japan until 2014 at the earliest. My understanding is the Japanese, Korean, and Taiwanese leagues all recognize PED suspensions issued by Major League Baseball.
ReplyDelete^^^This is true.
ReplyDeleteI don't like the 6 man rotation either but it is better than the Wheeler to the bullpen to save him innings. It seems like pitchers get hurt when moving back and forth, between starting and relieving. I really don't care what about the short term effect of a six men rotation. I see 2014 and 2015 as the much larger priority.
ReplyDeleteDidn't know that....Can he still work out with the team while under suspension? bc that would be a great reason to cut him immediately...
ReplyDeleteI believe he can
ReplyDeleteRichard, anyone thinking the Mets can pass all these teams (with only this amount of talent)and make it to the playoffs is not being realistic.
ReplyDeleteI would rather each of these pitchers be allowed to pitch quality outings to the end... 7-8 innings... and then, shut them down for the season when they reach the limit.
I would also ask both of them to travel with the team until the season ends. I can't think of any better two guys have hanging around giving out autographs.
Lastly, this would give the team additional time to look at guys like Jake deGrom, Rafael Montero, and/or Darin Gorski.
I agree about this year and I agree with you for the most part. It would be in the best interest of the careers of Harvey and Wheeler. The one issue is that Montero will also be at his inning limit. I'm not sure about the other two. But it really doesn't matter who they use.
ReplyDeleteYou know from my previous post that I would love to see the Mets move up a few slots in the 2014 draft so if I was running the Mets it would be all about 2014 and 2015. I would make move just for the purpose of losing, that would be wrong but I would protect the future even if the results are a few more loses.
