Morning all...
Well, I originally was going to make Tulo the subject here but we did a good job on that already this week.
Frankly, any of you can take this in any direction that you want, but I got an email from one our readers (and the old sponsor of the site), attorney Mark Mokris. Here's his email and I thought it would be a good opening subject:
Hi Mack,
The Mets playing in Arizona got me thinking about the future.
I was wondering what your thoughts are in regards as who should get the Mets Arizona Fall League slots this year. I can't remember the number of players we can send but I thought the following players were intriguing candidates:
Cesar Puello (he will be done with his suspension and this will give him more at bats before the winter leagues)
Aderlin Rodriguez ( I am assuming he's still around somewhere. Got to love when the Mets put a player on the DL for an undisclosed injury and then he totally disappears for months)
Cory Vaughn ( Needs more at bats since lost so much time to injury this year)
Michael Fulmer (needs more innings since missed first half with knee surgery)
Domingo Tapia (dismal year might as well start the conversion to reliever)
Jeurys Familia (not sure he is still eligible but if he is might as well get him more comfortable relieving)
Jack Leathersich (needs to work on his control).
Maybe Dustin Lawley if the Mets want to have him may be to skip a level?
May be this would be a good topic for the Sunday War Room or just a post. As always, thank you and I hope that you and your family are well.

I dont know how many players each team can send. 2 pitchers and 2 position players?
I would send Fulmer and Gorski as pitchers. Both have been hurt and need the innings. And I think Puello was there last year so I dont know if he can go there again but he would get my vote along with Vaugn. Aderlin Rodriguez takes Puello's place if Puello isnt going.
I would definitely send Fulmer to Arizona. He lost 3/4 of his season so he sure needs some innings. Cory Vaughn could be really interesting too.
From Wiki:
Each August, Major League Baseball clubs hold a position draft[1] to determine the players who will go to Arizona. Most are Double-A and Triple-A Minor League players.[1] Each club can opt to send two players below Double-A. Foreign players are allowed, as long as the player is not on his native country's primary protected player list. The league is designed for these prospects to refine their skills and perform in game settings in front of major and minor league baseball scouts and team executives, who are in attendance at almost every game. Play begins shortly after the end of MLB's regular season in early October and ends in mid-November with a championship game between the winners of the East and West divisions.
The Arizona Fall League teams are each affiliated with five separate Major League teams; each affiliated Major League team provides seven players who team up to fill the 35-man roster of each team.[1] Additionally, teams may elect to send Taxi Squad players who are only eligible on Wednesdays and Saturdays. MLB teams also provide managers, coaches, and trainers.[1]
2012 Roster:
RHP Ryan Fraser
LHP Chase Huchingson
LHP Adam Kolarek
RHP Gregory Peavey
SS Daniel Muno
OF Darrell Ceciliani
OF Cesar Puello
Fulmer, Aderline, Nimmo, Vaughn, Akeel Morris, and Tapia.
All guys with great potential that could use a little more playing time.
I love how Morris has bounced back. Tapia needs as much development time as possible. Fulmer and Aderline Rodriguez have missed time and could benefit from more playing time. Nimmo needs at bats, he just seems like he could use as much playing time as possible. And Vaughn also missed time and could use more games so he's ready for AAA next year.
Charley, didnt you read Mack's comment before you posted? The Mets are only allowed to have 2 players below AA.
I agree with you on Fulmer and Aderlin. And those 2 are the 2 below AA. The other 5 need to be AA or AAA. I would add Centeno or Pena aswell and Leathersich and if eligible Familia.
Given the dearth of left handed pitching, I think the call on Gorski might be a good one. Vaughn would be the other one who could use some time regaining his swing. They are both fringe prospects -- not the kind like Wilmer Flores or Cesar Puello -- posting gaudy numbers who need an additional showcase. Then again, gaudy numbers don't necessarily mean anything. Look up Jordany Valdespin's 2011 AA/AAA combined stats and we saw how that worked out. :)
I'd send Robles. Nice potential for this kid but also injury and ineffective this year. Hopefully the AFL could build some arm strength and vault him into some prospect list discussions by this time next year.
Robles was another player that Frank Francisco tried to talk into staying in extended camp this year (even though he wasn't making the MLB bucks). Robles also is well know for his ''attitude', but you are right about his reduction of velo this year
My picks:
RP Hamilton Bennett
OF Cory Vaughn
OF Darrell Ceciliani
OF Kyle Johnson
C Kevin Plawecki
SP Logan Verrett
Akeel Morris is a good call. He would be an interesting choice. I like the idea of sending prospects that won't necessarily play winterball. Cory Vaughn played in the winter leagues last year but I still would like to see him in Arizona. It's starting to be exciting watching the development of the Mets minor league system. I wouldn't mind seeing Cecchini skip Savannah and start next season at St. Lucie but if the Mets didn't do that with Plawecki who should have started at St. Lucie and could have already been in Binghamton than I doubt they will do that in this instance. The shortstop position should be interesting next year to see how it sorts out over the entire system.
My picks:
Kevin Plawecki - C
Michael Fulmer - SP
Domingo Tapia - as RP
Darrell Cecilliani - OF
Jack Leathersich - RP
Aderlin Rodriguez - 3b and 1b
Jeurys Familia - Rp
I'm writing about Cecchini tomorrow. He had a great June followed by an injury in July. He's red hot right now. He's 19. Hmm...
I see three possible reasons for sending farmstock to the AFL:
Augment an abbreviated season: (Fulmer, Tapia)
Contemplating a level skip: (Bennet, Lawley)
Showcasing for mid-winter trade(s): (Vaughn, Gorski, Verret)
And there's always Angel Cuan :-)
Interesting picks, Mack. I like the selection of Johnson. I'm high on him. Verrett too, is a good choice for SP. My choices would be:
SP: Logan Verrett
RP: Jeff Walters
OF: Cory Vaughn
OF: Darrell Ceciliani
OF: Kyle Johnson
OF: Travis Taijeron
1B: Jayce Boyd
I'll save Plawecki for next year. I'd love to get Dustin Lawley in too, but there's just such limited space.
I didn't know the rules ....sorry Johan.
I'd still send Fulmer and Morris. Other than that, , Vaughn, Leathersich, Mazzoni, and den Dekkee.
I'd want to give guys with potential who missed time this year, a chance to play as much as possible.
Familia is a good pick.
Pawlecki is having a great year and is a catcher. I'd give him his rest...
