BINGHAMTON, NY – The Binghamton Mets are proud to recognize three players for their 2013 team awards. Allan Dykstra has been named the Most Valuable Player, the Pitcher of the Year nod goes to Jeff Walters and Mark Cohoon has been selected as the Most Inspirational Player.
First baseman Allan Dykstra was named to the Eastern League All-Star Game and selected as the top first baseman on the league’s Season-Ending All-Star Team. Playing in the Southern Tier for his third season, the San Diego, California native has already posted career-highs with 20 home runs and 80 RBI. He leads the league with .436 on-base percentage and has collected 101 walks, the most any Eastern Leaguer has racked up since 2003.
Pitching at the Double-A level for the first time, Jeff Walters quickly asserted himself as the top reliever in the Eastern League. The right-hander has already set a B-Mets single-season and career record with 38 saves. His single-season saves total ranks second in Eastern League history trailing only Brent Stentz (43, 1998 New Britain Rock Cats)
Walters has compiled a 2.09 ERA over 53 appearances and a 9.64 K/9 IP ratio, the third-best among Eastern League relievers. Selected in the seventh round of the 2010 draft out of the University of Georgia, he represented the B-Mets at the Eastern League All-Star Game in July and was named to the league’s Season-Ending All-Star Team.
Returning to Binghamton for his fourth tour with the B-Mets, starting pitcher Mark Cohoon proved to be one of the team’s most reliable arms. After moving to the rotation in late April, the southpaw tossed five innings or more in 17 of his 20 starts. He compiled a 9-4 record and a 4.00 ERA and put his name all over the franchise record book. In 2013, Cohoon became the winningest pitcher with 23 victories.
Selected by the Mets in the 12th round of the 2009 draft out of North Central Texas College, Cohoon holds the B-Mets career record in games started (65), innings pitched (384.1) and strikeouts (270).
