LAST GAME: The B-Mets ended the 2013 regular season with an 8-1 loss to the New Hampshire Fisher Cats on Monday afternoon at NYSEG Stadium. A pair of two-out base hits for New Hampshire gave them an early 2-0 lead against Mark Cohoon. The lefty finished after five innings of two-run baseball. Armando Rodriguez allowed two more innings in his inning, and the Fisher Cats busted the game open with three more runs against Ryan Fraser in the seventh. Binghamton’s only run scored on a sacrifice fly from Alonzo Harris. Binghamton took two of the three games in the series, and won their 26th series of the season. They finished the 2013 regular season with an 86-55 record.
BINGHAMTON STARTER: RHP Noah Syndergaard makes his 12th start of the season for the B-Mets and third against Trenton. He finished the regular season with a 6-1 record and a 3.00 ERA. On June 30 he allowed one run in five innings in a no-decision, and on July 28 he earned the win allowed one run and one hit over six innings. The Texas native is coming off of his worst start of his professional career. In three innings against Bowie, he gave up a career-high 11 runs on nine hits. The Baysox blasted three home runs against him in his first loss at the Double-A level. Before that start, Syndergaard had thrown 20.0 consecutive scoreless innings. In 54.0 innings pitched, he has 69 strikeouts and only 12 walks. Opponents are only hitting .228 against him. He was drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays in the first (supplemental) round of the 2010 draft out of Legacy HS (TX).
TRENTON STARTER: RHP Bryan Mitchell makes his fourth start of the season for the Thunder and first against Binghamton. He has not received a decision in any of his first three Trenton starts, and allowed four earned runs in 18.2 innings pitched. In his last start he threw 7.1 innings and gave up one unearned run against the New Britain Rock Cats. Mitchell began the season with the Tampa Yankees (High-A) in the Florida State League. In 23 starts, he went 4-11 with a 5.12 ERA. The Yankees drafted Mitchell in the 16th round of the 2009 draft out of Rockingham County HS (NC).
FRANCHISE RECORD: The B-Mets ended the 2013 regular season with 86 wins, which is a franchise record. Their previous high was 82 wins, set in three different seasons. The B-Mets won 26 series, and went 27-18 in one-run games.
POSTSEASON HISTORY: Binghamton is playing in the postseason for the first time since 2004. They have two league championships in their 22-year history; one in 1992 (inaugural season) and again in 1994. They are 17-16 in the postseason, and have never played Trenton before. SINCE THEY CLINCHED: Binghamton clinched the Eastern Division regular season title on August 21 with a victory against the Bowie Baysox. Since they clinced, the B-Mets went 5-6 to finish the regular season. As a team they have posted a .214 batting average and have only hit three home runs. The pitching staff has posted a 4.39 ERA.
WHEN LEADING LATE: In the regular season the B-Mets went 75-2 when leading after seven innings. The only team with fewer losses in that category is Trenton, who is 61-1 when leading after seven. When leading after eight innings, Binghamton is 67-2. Jeff Walters is ranked second in Eastern League history with 38 saves. He is 38-42 in save opportunities, and has five saves against Trenton.
AGAINST THE THUNDER: Binghamton went 10-7 in 17 games against Trenton in the regular season. At Arm & Hammer Park, they went 3-2. Trenton has won three of the last five contests.
NEXT GAME PREVIEW: Game Two of the Eastern League Division Series is Thursday night in Trenton. The B-Mets send LHP Darin Gorski to the mound against Trenton’s RHP Mikey O’Brien. First pitch is at 7:05 PM from Arm & Hammer Park.
