LAST GAME: The Trenton Thunder scored three runs with two outs in the tenth inning and strunned the B-Mets, taking game one of the ELDS, 6-5, on Wednesday night at Arm & Hammer Park. After Jeff Walters recorded the first two outs of the inning, he gave up five straight hits to end the game. Ben Gamel blooped a game-winning single into right field to score Tyler Austin. Binghamton broke a 3-3 tie with two runs in the top of the 10th inning. Noah Syndergaard allowed three runs in six innings on the mound in a no-decision. Danny Muno and Darrell Ceciliani led the offense with three hits, and Wilfredo Tovar had two RBI. The win gave Trenton a 1-0 lead in the series.
BINGHAMTON STARTER: LHP Darin Gorski makes his 14th start of the season for Binghamton, and third against the Thunder. He finished the regular season with a 6-1 record and a 1.83 ERA. In his last start against Trenton he threw a complete game, but lost 2-0 on July 25. Gorski has thrown at least 7.0 innings in six of his last seven starts, and is 3-1 during that stretch. He was named Eastern League Pitcher of the Week for August 19-25. In his last start, he threw 7.0 innings of shutout baseball against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats. Over 78.2 innings pitched, opponents are hitting .172 against Gorski. He has 67 strikeouts, and is 2-0 in eight starts on the road. Gorski began the season with Las Vegas (AAA), and went 1-1 in four games. The Mets drafted the lefty in the seventh round of the 2009 draft out of Kutztown University of Pennsylvania.
TRENTON STARTER: RHP Mikey O’Brien makes his 20th start of the season for the Thunder, and fifth start against the B-Mets. During the regular season, he went 7-8 with a 4.12 ERA. In four previous starts against Binghamton, he is 1-3 with an 8.66 ERA. O’Brien is 4-2 with a 2.77 ERA in nine games at home. Since winning his first four starts, he is 3-8 in his last 11 decisions. In 107.0 innings pitched, he has racked up 90 strikeouts, and held opponents to a .261 batting average.
HEART-BREAKER: Last night the Thunder were down to their final strike two different times before scoring three runs to win the game. Binghamton lost in walk-off fashion six times in the regular season, and lost in extra innings five different times. Jeff Walters was 38-42 in save chances in the regular season, and went 5-for-6 against the Thunder.
MISSED OPPORTUNITIES: Binghamton stranded 13 men on base in their loss in game one last night. They went 4-for-12 with runners in scoring position. In six of the 10 innings last night, the B-Mets put their leadoff runner on base but only scored in three of them. In the top of the eighth inning, the B-Mets had the bases loaded with nobody out, but failed to score.
ALLOWING HIT NUMBERS: The Trenton Thunder collected 13 base hits against the B-Mets last night. They have allowed 10 or more base hits in six of the team’s last eight games. They are 4-4 during that stretch.
AVOIDING THREE STRAIGHT LOSSES: Tonight the B-Mets will look to avoid falling behind 2-0 in the ELDS. Overall, Binghamton looks to avoid losing three straight games for the second time this season. The only other time Binghamton lost three games in a row was May 1-3.
MUNO AT LEADOFF: Danny Muno had three hits last night, and got on base five different times. His OBP in the regular season was .384.
AGAINST THE THUNDER: Binghamton went 10-7 in 17 games against Trenton in the regular season. At Arm & Hammer Park, they went 3-2. Trenton won three of the final five games in the regular season.
NEXT GAME PREVIEW: Game Three of the Eastern League Division Series comes to NYSEG Stadium on Friday night. First pitch is at 7:05 PM as the B-Mets send RHP Logan Verrett to the mound to face RHP Shane Greene for the Thunder.
