Draft 15 – Cole Acosta, Cole McKay, Drew Smith, Cody Morris, Noah Birkholder

draft - cole acosta9-21-13 – We’ve seen Cole Acosta (2015) before, most notably at the PG Underclass All-American Games. And, his stuff on Friday was in line with what we’ve seen before, and perhaps even better. He showed the best velocity we’ve seen yet from him, as he worked between 84-87 mph with his fastball, touching 88 and then 89 mph. And, he also mixed a 68 mph curveball with good shape, and late-breaking action. The slider was also part of his repertoire, but on a limited basis. He threw two of them, flashing some bite at 77-80 mph. He has a frame that screams projection, and he looks the part on the mound. His ability to throw strikes with all three of these pitches was perhaps the most impressive part of his performance. He has a strong lower half, and a high waist. Look for him to add more velocity in the very near future. He’s a pitcher that needs to be watched very closely. .  http://www.perfectgame.org/Articles/View.aspx?article=9017

In his first season with the Patriots, Smith totaled only 11.2 IP while posting a 5.40 ERA. Smith, a right-hander from Crowley, Texas, ranked as the fifth best prospect in the Alaska league. He moved into a new role this summer as he became the closer for the Mat-Su Miners. With this opportunity, Smith showed his talent as a top prospect by striking out 17 batters in 18 innings of work as well as posting 5 saves which was good for third most in the Alaska Baseball League. Drew Smith was one of four DBU pitchers that earned recognition from Baseball America. http://www.collegebaseballdaily.com/2013/10/11/2014-top-100-players-countdown-92-drew-smith-dallas-baptist/
