According to NJ.com's Jorge Castillo, the Mets have officially informed SS Omar Quintanilla that he will not be tendered a contract for 2014. Likewise, ESPN's Adam Rubin is reporting, via Twitter, that RP Scott Atchison has also been informed that he is not going to be tendered a contract for 2014.
The moves reduce the Mets 40 man roster to 38 players heading into the Winter Meetings and the Rule 5 Draft.
Both are intelligent moves, primarily for freeing up projected salaries that can now be added to the budget that is available for new players. Wilfredo Tovar can do the same thing Quintanilla would do and recent additions to the pen have taken away the need to stay with Atchison.
ReplyDeleteGood move, Sandy.
As I said in my post earlier....don't be surprised to hear Justin Turner's name at SS a little more once we entered Spring Training. His playing time there has been slowly increasing over the past 2 years and his defensive metrics show that he's been servicable in his small sample size there.
ReplyDeleteHis bat would play nice there.
And, most important thing about Turner... he is such a positive force in the dugout and clubhouse
ReplyDeleteand he's a ginger.....Who doesn't love a Pie Throwing Ginger.
ReplyDeleteIn all seriousness though.....Since he's been a Met, Turner has hit .265/.326/.370 with 3 HR and 40 RBIs a season. That's surprisingly good enough for a Top 10 spot amongst SS in 2013
There should be some more action before the day is done also...
