The Mets have claimed right-hander Ryan Reid off waivers from the Pirates, as we reported earlier this afternoon. Reid, 28, was designated for assignment along with Jerry Sands to make room for Clint Barmes and Edinson Volquez on the Pirates' 40-man roster.
In seven relief appearances for Pittsburgh last season, Reid pitched to a 1.64 ERA in 11 innings. He was 7-2 with a 2.73 ERA in 36 games for Triple-A Indianapolis last season after spending seven seasons in the Rays' minor league system. He could crack the Mets' big-league bullpen next year, or head to Triple-A Las Vegas.
Nice, low risk pick up.......throw him in the mix for ST and maybe we get lucky. The Pirates had a pretty good bullpen, too.
ReplyDeleteHe and CarreƱo may be looking at that last bullpen spot assuming both Edgin is a lock for one of them (and Familia is not).
ReplyDeleteIf he was any good pirates would have kept him.
ReplyDeleteOf course, no one has ever been waived and gone to a different team and become a solid player.
ReplyDeleteConsider the information listed below;
"The 28-year-old Reid made his big league debut for the Buccos in 2013 and pitched well, posting a 1.64 ERA with seven punchouts and three walks in 11 innings of work. He posted a 51.5 percent ground-ball rate and averaged 91.9 mph on his fastball in that brief Major League sample. Reid has enjoyed continued success as a reliever in the minors, as evidenced by his career 3.57 ERA in 194 innings at Triple-A. He's averaged 8.6 strikeouts and 3.2 walks per nine innings in parts of three seasons at that level"
But, I am sure your snarky response, based upon so much research, personal knowledge of Reid, the Pirates organization and supporting data is more conclusive.
From a Pirates blog comment--
ReplyDelete"What the Mets have is far less pitching depth than the Bucs. Reid will be much higher on their pecking order than he was on that of the Pirates."
Let that sink in a minute. The decades lowly Pirates have passed the Mets. When Pittsburgh starts to trash New York something's seriously wrong. Something has to give in the next few years with this franchise because right now we're, despite the promising "prospects", the joke of the neighborhood. That is not a position a team in MLB's #1 market should ever be in.
Reid is a good acquisition. Apparently Alderson valued him higher than Eric Surkamp. It seems to me that Surkamp is the better pitcher, but I am assuming that the reason is that Surkamp is a starter and Sandy was looking for another candidate for the pen.
ReplyDeleteThere were four really good players on the waiver wire, pitchers Reid and Surkamp, and outfielders Alex Castellanos and Jerry Sands. I would have liked to see the Mets snag more than one, but I am satisfied with Reid.
Of his 7 appearances with the Bucs last year, only the one on 6-28 stands out, but it was a 3 inning save with 4K's, which is impressive. Aside from that appearance he allowed too many hits 7 and had too few K's 3. In the minors he had seasons where his hits allowed were more than his innings.
ReplyDeleteHe seems like the type who can give you some effective outings, but also he'll appearances where he'll have trouble getting out of innings by allowing too many hits without a true out pitch to get him off the hook.
I'd have preferred the lefty Surkamp, but we'll see what Reid can do. I'm not sure he's worth a spot on the 40 man though.
