Draft 14 - A Quick Peek at - LHP - Justus Sheffield - Tullahoma (TN) HS

Justus Sheffield

6-13-13 - When brother Jordan went down with an elbow injury, Justus Sheffield carried much of the load for Tullahoma while leading the team to the state tournament. Bigger than his brother at 6-foot-0, 190 pounds, Sheffield throws in the low 90s. The nephew of former major league All-Star Gary Sheffield http://www.maxpreps.com/news/article.aspx?articleid=7c0ad513-b5e1-4ac1-b57e-8dedcc72c783&page=5

7-2-13 -  33. Justus Sheffield- LHP, Tullahoma (TN) HS http://www.ninebaseball.org/Wordpress/jeff-sullivans-top-100-2014-prospects/

7-24-13  -  10. Justus Sheffield, lhp, Tullahoma (Tenn.)/Ohio Warhawks - Sheffield is a year younger than his brother, Jordan, who entered the spring as one of the top high school pitchers and was up to 97 mph before having Tommy John surgery in April. Both brothers are committed to Vanderbilt. Justus Sheffield has a strong, compact 6-foot, 190-pound build and has gotten a little leaner in the last year. His fastball can sit in the 90-92 mph in shorter stints and was up to 94 in the spring. He has an athletic delivery that features a high leg kick and throws from a three-quarter slot. His mid-70s changeup with fade could become an above-average pitch. Sheffield also throws a 75-78 mph breaking ball with three-quarter tilt. A good athlete, Sheffield has also shown potential in center field. Young for the class, Sheffield will turn 18 just prior to the draft. http://www.baseballamerica.com/draft/tyler-koleks-heavy-fastball-among-tournament-of-stars-standouts/

7-25-13 – Top 30 High School Prospects For 2014 Draft - 25. Justus Sheffield, LHP, Tullahoma HS (TN) - 6'0/185, Draft Day Age: 18.06, Vanderbilt commit, Full Report & Video - Quick Take: Sheffield is very well-known as he worked 90-94 mph in a heavily-scouted outing last October in the same game that his older brother RHP Jordan (Red Sox draftee will be a freshman at Vandy this year) used as his coming out party, hitting 98 mph in relief of his little brother. Justus' upside is limited by his size but he's athletic with advanced command, typically working 89-92 mph with an above average 78-80 mph changeup and a solid average breaking ball. http://sbb.scout.com/2/1310090.html

7-31-13 - Clint Longenecker ‏@Clint_BA  - Justus Sheffield (TN) 90-91, t93 with low-80s sl, 75-78 ch and low-70s cb

8-6-13 - Top pitchers - East Coast Professional Showcase, Syracuse, NY -  7. Justus Sheffield, LHP, Tullahoma HS (Tenn.): Sheffield could have been higher up on this list, perhaps hurt slightly because he more or less threw the way people have come to expect. There's also the fact that he is a bit undersized, albeit while throwing left-handed. Sheffield reached 94 mph in this event, but some feel he needs a tighter breaking ball. http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20130806&content_id=56048786&vkey=news_mlb&c_id=mlb

2013 East Coast Pro Showcase Top 50 Prospects    - 9. Justus Sheffield – LHP, Tullahoma (TN) HS - LHP sat 92-94 and has the makings of three potential plus pitches http://www.ninebaseball.org/Wordpress/sullys-top-50-ecp-prospects/

8-14-13 – Through The Fence – Top 50 Prospects – 49. Justus Sheffield, LHP, Tullahoma HS (TN) - Much like his older brother Jordan, who was considered first-round material until Tommy John surgery all but made him honor his commitment to Vanderbilt, Justus has a plus fastball that can touch 94 mph. The 6’-0” southpaw is a great athlete and also adds an above-average, mid-70s change, as well as a mid-70s curve that still needs refining. Committed to Vanderbilt. http://throughthefencebaseball.com/2014-mlb-draft-top-50-prospects/36463#mwWwsFxSUZy7YC5V.99

8-13-13 - The Perfect Game All-American Classic in San Diego - Justus Sheffield (Tullahoma High School, Tenn.) has a quick arm and showed a better feel for pitching than I saw over his junior year, but at 6’0″ 185 there is only so much upside in his left arm. http://mlbdraftinsider.com/2013/08/thoughts-on-perfect-game-all-american-classic/?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter

8-16-13 - 11th All-American Classic - Justus Sheffield (LHP, Tullahoma HS (Tullahoma, TN)): Four-pitch lefty who continues to impress—showed all four pitches despite facing two batters; fastball worked in the low 90s; low-80s slider; low-70s curve; low-80s change; all pitches in line with his previous summer showings; advanced feel and pitchability; works the quadrants and already shows understanding of sequencing; repeatable motion and solid arm action; high-level follow, Day 1 candidate; Vandy commit. —Nick J. Faleris http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=21537

8-21-13 - Todd Gold ‏@TGold_PG  - 2014 LHP Justus Sheffield (Tullahoma, TN) just had 2 very impressive IP. K'd first 5, spotted up glove side very well, up to 92.

9-11-13 - Sully’s 2014 Top 100 MLB HS Draft Prospects – 21.Justus Sheffield – LHP, Tullahoma (TN) HS http://www.ninebaseball.org/Wordpress/sullys-2014-top-100-mlb-hs-draft-prospects/

9-29-13 – XMLBScout – 19.)LHP, Justus Sheffield, Tullahoma HS, Tullahoma TN, 5'11 180 L/L, saw him last year, seemed like the same guy but was within himself more for 5 innings, didn't rush as much as last year, fb velo same, 88-92, most were 88-89 with some life middle out vs RHH, sharp cb at times, not great command of it yet, but it has nasty action when he leads with elbow, all pitches from 3/4 slot, needs to stay compact in delivery, move to 1b is fair, work to be done still, good looking lefty for 2014 for sure, Vandy commit? Brother had arm blowout during 2013 season, Justus has had time to think and being a lefty, a premium spot out of HS, only has added value, plus he's got two solid average pitches and has improved his command over his 2012 performance. Still a bit eratic, but he's young and loves the game! http://xmlbscout.angelfire.com/

10-15-13 – Baseball America - 38. Justus Sheffield, lhp, Tullahoma (Tenn.) HS: He offers a fastball up to 95 mph, above-average breaking ball/changeup combo and the ability to throw strikes. http://www.baseballamerica.com/college/2014-draft-top-50-october-2013-carlos-rodon/
