5-28-13 - Derek Fisher, OF, Virginia - Like Conforto, the 6’-3”, 210-pound left-hander had a sensational freshman season, hitting .288 with 11 doubles, eight triples, seven home runs and 50 RBI. He has started hot out of the gate for the Cavaliers, going 13-for-38 (.342) over the first 11 games. He has added a double, triple, two home runs and has knocked in 16 runs for undefeated Virginia. 5-27-13 - Derek Fisher was a much higher profile prospect than Turner in the same 2011 prep draft class, turning down significant money in the 6th round from Texas. Fisher was a big name for a while in high school, but as a cold weather prospect from Pennsylvania that had an iffy spring and serious swing-and-miss questions, his seven figure price tag limited his options. His freshman year in Charlottesville followed this narrative, as he hit .288 with 22 walks and 61 strikeouts in 219 AB despite flashing upside with 11 doubles, 8 triples and 7 homers as a toolshed with a center field profile. Fisher has made some adjustments at the plate this spring, hitting .309/.423/.533 with 23 BB and 30 K. There's a lot to like here with a 6'3, 210 pound left-handed hitting center fielder that flashes above average speed and power with some aptitude for making adjustments. LINK

9-4-13 – Mack’s Mock Draft v1.0 – 8 – Phillies – OF  Derek Fisher – Virginia – Excellent gap hitter with above average bat speed. Had a horrible 2013 offensively in school but still projects out as a top draft pick. Projects as one of the top college bats in the draft.

10-6-13 – Kendall Rogers/PG – College Prospects -  6. Derek Fisher, of, Virginia (Drafted: 2011, Rangers -- 6th round) - Last year, Hunter Renfroe was the guy we tabbed as someone who would take a big step forward. Fisher fits that bill for the 2014 campaign. Fisher is very athletic with a good frame. He has a smooth swing from the left side and has the tools and power to be a feared, elite hitter in college and at the next level.

 

10-14-13 – Top ’14 College Hitters - 1. Derek Fisher / OF / Virginia — Fischer is going to have to hit — he doesn’t have the arm strength or instincts to be anything but a left fielder — to earn this ranking, but he certainly has the offensive tools to justify it. The left-handed hitting outfielder has above-average bat speed and a linear swing that should lead to above-average power numbers, though we haven’t seen that translate into games as much as one would hope. 10-18-13 – Matt Garroich – Derek Fisher at Virginia was highly touted out of high school, I had him 20th overall in the draft, and he has done nothing to hurt his stock while a Cavalier. He still has some swing and miss issues, a balding head and big time power but his speed has maintained better than I expected. 7-24-13  -  4. Braxton Davidson, 1b/of, Roberson High, Asheville, N.C./Dirtbags - The 6-foot-2, 210-pound Davidson has a large frame with wide shoulders and a strong lower half. Using a wide base and deep hand load, Davidson produces raw plus power, which is his carrying tool. With three home runs in four games, he tied the TOS record and hit more home runs than all of the players at last year’s TOS combined (two). Folklore grew that one homer bounced onto a highway more than 500 feet away. His prodigious power does come at the expense of swings and misses. 11-14-13 - Michael Schwartze - The two top names behind Jackson are Clovis (Calif.) High School shortstop Jacob Gatewood and T.C. Robertson (Ashville, N.C.) High School outfielder Braxton Davidson. Gatewood has big upside with huge raw power, but showed contact issues over the summer, as his swing was often stuck in batting-practice mode during games leading to a lot of swings and misses. Davidson showed enough plate skills to suggest he’s one of the best pure hitters in prep class but may require an eventual switch to first base. 3.       Michael Conforto

 

5-28-13 - Michael Conforto, OF, Oregon State - After hitting .349 with 14 doubles, 13 home runs, 76 RBI and a slash line of .438/.601/1.039 as a freshman last year, the 6’-1”, 200-pound left-hander was showered with awards and had high expectations coming into this year. After nine games, he was hitting .273 with two doubles, no home runs and four RBI. On Saturday, he went 3-for-7 in a double-header with his first two home runs of the season and five RBI. On Sunday, he went 3-for-5 with two more home runs and seven RBI. Arizona Diamondbacks — Michael Conforto, OF, Oregon State - After an incredible freshman season in which he hit .349 over 58 games with 14 doubles, 13 home runs, 76 RBI and a .438 OBP/.601 SLG, the 6’-1”, 215 pound left-hander has regressed a bit his sophomore year. Over 58 games, he is hitting .326 with nine home runs, 42 RBI and a .450 OBP/.501 SLG. While he has improved his walk rate and approach, the power numbers are down. A great talent, he should be among the better college bats available in the 2014 MLB draft. 7-21-13 - Cuba’s Norge Ruiz dominated his first time through the order, striking out five of the first nine batters faced. The second time through the order got off to a strong start for Team USA as Trea Turner (NC State) opened the fourth with a base hit to left center. LSU’s Alex Bregman followed with a base knock to give Team USA a pair of base runners. Conforto is a mature hitter with plus raw power thanks to above-average bat speed and an ability to consistently drive the ball with backspin carry. Because he’s gradually adjusted his approach over the last year to produce more in-game power, the utility of his hit tool may be tied to his strikeout rate. Defensively, Conforto is limited to left field due to below-average arm strength and speed, as well as his shaky instincts and stiff actions. 4.       Michael Gettys

 

6-9-13  -  26. Boston Red Sox — Michael Gettys, RHP, Gainesville HS (GA) - An athletic right-hander who has touched 95 mph with his fastball, the 6’-2” Gettys is one of the more exciting players to watch in the 2014 prep class. As a junior, he hit .406 and stole 38 bases over 32 games. On the mound, he had a 0.99 ERA, 0.74 WHIP and 114 K/18 BB over 73 innings. 8-30-13 - Like Buxton and Demeritte, Michael Gettys is a two-way player with a plus arm who has been clocked at 100 mph from the outfield and can hit 95 mph on the mound. Also like those two, his offensive potential should override his upside on the mound. Aside from his plus arm, Gettys also has plus speed, plus bat speed and showed some serious power at the Under Armour All-American Game home run derby at Wrigley Field. One of his home runs was a moonshot to dead center field and several others were high arching bombs to left. Pitchers don’t typically do things like that. In fact, most of the people around me at the game agreed when I stated, “That’s not a pitcher.” That’s not to say he couldn’t make it as a starter. Swing:   Gettys’ stance starts slightly open with his hands above his shoulders.  His stride is about a 65 degree stride that helps him keep his hips closed.  He has a shoulder rotation trigger in which he closes up his front shoulder.   This will help him keep his hands back on off speed pitches.  He has a very short swing that is direct to the ball with a high finish giving him lift.  He shows above average to plus bat speed.  He does show very good pitch selection. He could hit for avg and power at the next level. Base running:  Plain and simple, Michael is a burner.  He has been clocked at 6.42 in the 60 yard.  He gets a very quick step out of the box.  He shows very good instincts on the bases and the ability to read pitchers to get a good jump. Defense:  Gettys has good instincts in the field and shows good routes for his age in CF.  He also shows good reactions on his first step.   All that being said, he has a canon for an arm.  He throws 94 off the mound and shows an even better arm from the OF hitting 100mph. He has a solid build with sloped shoulders and a strong lower half. On the mound, Verdugo has a quick, loose-and-easy arm action and smooth delivery. His fastball sits 88-91 mph and touches 93 with armside run and some sink from a high three-quarter slot (although he will vary his arm slot depending on the hand of the hitter). His mid-70s breaking ball can show sharp 1-7 tilt at its best and flashes average. The Arizona State commit compliments with a 79-80 mph changeup. At the plate, Verdugo has an open stance and uses a toe tap. He has a feel for the barrel and generates pull-side power. 11-6-13 – Todd Gold – WWBA World Championship – Alex Verdugo (2014 LHP/OF, Texas Scout Team Yankees) - The two-way prospect out has scouts split on whether his future lies on the mound or in the outfield. What is certain is that his curveball is a weapon, and he used it with devastating effect in his start against the Dirtbags. His matchup against one of the top left handed hitting prospects in the class (Braxton Davidson) was must-see for crosscheckers. In that matchup Verdugo buckled Davidson's knees with his deep 12-6 hammer, striking him out with it in their second encounter after starting him off with it to begin their first with impressive results. His fastball sat 88-92 as per usual, and a second inning hiccup aside, commanded it well for two of his three innings. Just as importantly, Verdugo bounced back from his spell of wildness in the second inning when his front shoulder began opening early, he managed to make the adjustment and resumed hitting his spots in the third inning, striking out the side on 10 pitches. 11-22-13 - Alex Verdugo, OF/LHP Sahuaro High School, 2013 WWBA Championships (via Baseball Instinct) – Alex Verdugo is a 6'1", 190 LB left handed pitcher and outfielder. He is arguably the best two-way player available in this draft along with Michael Gettys. I'm not sure at this point where he should play. Similar to Trey Ball last year, he has high-end tools both on the mound and in the outfield. His speed is just average, so I don't see him sticking in centerfield long term. His thick legs look more like the legs of a pitcher than an up the middle talent. Once he matures he'll likely be a right fielder so the bat has to be very good, but the bat is that good. He can hit the ball with authority from line to line. He has a strong build but doesn't have a lot of physical projection remaining. If I had to choose, I'd put him in the outfield but athletic lefties with three pitches don't come along that often. If he sits in the low 90's regularly and touches higher, he may end up on the mound. However the spring works out for him, he has the talent to be drafted in the late first to early second round. In His sophomore campaign with the Beavers, Davis continued to prove that his freshman season was no fluke. An All-Pac-12 First Team selection, the Beaver outfielder played in 63 games during the 2013 season, starting in 62 of them. The 6’0” sophomore led the team with a .335 average and his 22 doubles, 61 RBI and 86 hits were good enough for first in the Pac-12. The talented two-way player was also named the Most Outstanding Player of the NCAA Corvallis Regional. The Redmond, WA native attended Redmond High School where he was named All-League and All-State after his senior season. Davis not only showed promise at the plate but also proved to be a threat on the mound. Davis went 7-3 for Redmond while posting a 3.92 ERA and striking out 61 batters in 50 IP. Harrison has plenty of upside with a cannon for an arm in the OF and as he continues to be educated on how to be a baseball player his ceiling is certainly high.  He is no different than most Midwest hitters though as his hit tool needs serious refinement and reps against quality arms. He is a physical presence with a wide back, slightly sloped shoulders and broad chest. Brodey has strength throughout his 6-foot-1, 195-pound frame with trim, muscular legs. He has an effortless, athletic delivery and gets over his front leg well, which allows him to get good downward plane. The Stanford commit, who throws from a three-quarter arm slot, gets natural cutting action from his smooth, clean arm action. He compliments an upper-80s fastball with two secondary offerings that flash average: a mid-70s breaking ball with 1-7 action and depth, and an upper-70s changeup with fade. Brodey has good control. He has a squared, balanced and upright stance and levered swing that produces pull-side power. 11-6-13 – Todd Gold – WWBA World Championship – Austin Murphy (2014 OF, Mets Scout Team/Orlando Scorpions) - A look at his player profile page confirms that Murphy was completely off the radar entering the fall of his senior year. He made a huge first impression in Jupiter, showing a smooth lefthanded swing with good bat speed and the ability to whip the barrel through the hitting zone with authority. He not only showed the ability to use the whole ballpark, he runs very well, suggesting that he can be an asset defensively in the outfield. As a late pickup to a loaded organization that plays together year-round, he served in an extra hitter/DH type of role in Jupiter. He will be an interesting prospect to follow this spring, as he has gone from being off the radar to one of the more intriguing position prospects in northern Florida. 11-6-13 – Todd Gold – WWBA World Championship – Jamal Howard (2014 OF, Texas Sun Devils) - It's difficult for a player with Howard's chiseled middle linebacker physique to slip through the cracks, but having only played in a couple of prior national tournaments and making his big stage debut at the East Coast Pro Showcase in August, Howard was still a lesser known commodity to most of the industry. One scout commented that the Alabama commit looks like he could suit up for Nick Saban's national powerhouse football team next fall. While he will eventually have to reign in his hyper aggressive approach, he showed that he wasn't afraid to use his quality bat speed. He stole the spotlight on Sunday morning's first set of games, with several pitchers lighting up radar guns around the complex, Howard crushed a walk-off grand slam to push the Sun Devils to victory over the Ontario Blue Jays. He slashed line drives and hard ground balls evenly between the pullside, opposite field and up the middle. His impressive spray chart from his .500/.533/.500 showing is impressive in it's even distribution, even putting down perfect bunts for hits down each baseline. His carrying tool is his speed and as a present burner he should be able to chew up acres of real estate centerfield.
