The Top 13 First Basemen in the 2014 MLB Draft

1B

1.       Justin Bellinger

6-13-13  -  20 - Detroit Tigers — Justin Bellinger, 1B, St. Sebastian’s HS (MA) - At 6’-5” and 235 pounds, the power potential is massive with the left-handed hitter. His patient approach at the plate, along with his strong wrists, allows him to wait on any pitch and drive it into the stratosphere. He has been a fixture at all of the summer events and showcases and is always one of the top performers. He doesn’t have a lot of speed (7.1/60) but he does project to a solid defender at first base. http://beforeitsnews.com/sports/2013/06/2014-mlb-mock-draft-1-0-no-time-like-the-present-2513748.html?currentSplittedPage=2

6-13-13 - Justin Bellinger hit .415 with eight home runs for St. Sebastian's School in 2013. .No prep player from Massachusetts was drafted this year, but that could change next year when Bellinger is available. He batted .415 with 36 RBI and eight home runs. He had a monster game against Portsmouth Abbey in the first game of the year, belting three home runs with 11 RBIs. Followed that outing with a triple and home run and eight RBIs against Dexter School. http://www.maxpreps.com/news/article.aspx?articleid=7c0ad513-b5e1-4ac1-b57e-8dedcc72c783&page=7

2.       J.D. Davis - CSF

10-14-13 – Top ’14 College Hitters - 6. J.D. Davis / 1B-3B / Cal-State Fullerton — Davis doesn’t have the ‘fame’ of some of the names on this list, but a solid summer made him one of the first names brought up by scouts when asked about the Cape Cod season.  Davis has above-average power to all parts of the field, with a good approach and enough bat speed to hit for power and average. A lack of athleticism likely keeps him at first base, but a team could try to stick him at the hot corner where he’s got plenty of arm strength and decent hands. http://mlbdraftinsider.com/2013/10/top-14-for-14-college-hitters/

10-15-13 – Baseball America - 36. J.D. Davis, 1b/3b/rhp, Cal State Fullerton: Unsigned Rays fifth-rounder out of high school in 2011 offers power on the mound and at the plate. http://www.baseballamerica.com/college/2014-draft-top-50-october-2013-carlos-rodon/

12-9-13 – Pine Tar Press  -  44- 1B/RHP JD Davis Fullerton 4/27/93- He is one of two potential Fullerton players who will be looked at on the mound and in the batters box. Unlike, Matt Chapman though Davis has thrown more to this point showing an easy 92-94 fastball and a solid slide piece. But, he is rated high as a hitter because of his highly sought after RH power. He is not a swing and miss power hitter either as he gets the most out of each AB. (OUt of first round- Mariners selection) http://pinetarpress.com/early-look-2014-mlb-draft/

3.       Casey Gilllaspie

6-9-13  - 20.Casey Gillaspie, 1B (Wichita State): One of the more interesting pure college bats on the board for next June. Gillaspie has excellent bat speed that produces solid power, although it may need to improve a bit for first base. http://www.minorleaguerundown.com/2013/06/09/2014-mlb-draft-top-30-prospects/

10-14-13 – Top ’14 College Hitters - 11. Casey Gillespie / 1B / Wichita State — There’s no doubt that the switch hitting Gillespie can get on base (.447 on-base percentage, 62 walks in 2012), but there are concerns about his size (6-5, 240) and whether or not he’ll hit for enough power to play everyday at first. http://mlbdraftinsider.com/2013/10/top-14-for-14-college-hitters/

4.       Austin Davidson - Pepperdine

5.       A.J. Reed

5-28-13 - A.J. Reed, 1B/LHP, Kentucky - Both a pitcher and hitter for the Wildcats, the 6’-4”, 245-pound left-hander has been his own offensive force when on the mound. Over the three games he has started, he is 10-for-14 with a triple, two home runs and 11 RBI. On the season, he is hitting .409 (18-for-44) with a double, triple, four home runs and 22 RBI over 11 games. His .480 OBP and .750 SLG show the kind of offensive talent he is. On the mound, he is 2-1 with a 4.50 ERA and 11 K/2 BB over 15.1 innings. http://throughthefencebaseball.com/2014-mlb-draft/29840#fm24otWuYCEocLQZ.99

5-23-13  -  Kentucky sophomore A.J. Reed (LHP-1B)was named All-SEC first team as the designated hitter and utility player.  http://www.ukathletics.com/sports/m-basebl/spec-rel/052813aaa.html Reed is the first UK player to earn first-team All-SEC honors since Thomas McCarthy in 2011. He is the first UK player to earn first-team honors as the designated hitter since Brad Hindersman in 1993.

6.       Sam Travis

5-28-13 - Sam Travis, 1B, Indiana - I need to show some love for the Midwest. Travis was named the Big 10 Freshman of the Year after hitting .319 over 60 games with 17 doubles, nine home runs, 50 RBI and a slash line of .397/.509/.906. The 6’-0”, 200-pound right-hander reached base in his first 30 games, including a 17-game hitting streak. This season, he has reached base in all eight of Indiana’s games to start the season. Over those eight games, he is 13-for-29 (.448) with five doubles, two home runs, 10 RBI and 10 walks for a ridiculous slash line of .600/.828/1.428 http://throughthefencebaseball.com/2014-mlb-draft/29840#fm24otWuYCEocLQZ.99

12.   Matt Wezniak

9-21-13 – 1B Matt Wezniak is another one of the Clippers D-I commits, his to San Diego State. He is a strong, well-built player with an athletic frame. Wezniak has a smooth, fluid swing with some pop and he also runs well, especially for his size.  http://www.perfectgame.org/Articles/View.aspx?article=9017

13.   James Monaghan

9-21-13 –  Team Maryland is staying in the same hotel as myself and they had some interesting players in their lineup, with one standing out above the rest, literally. At 6-foot-5, 187-pounds, 1B James Monaghan  is a projectable lefthanded hitting first basemen, showing bat speed, along with power potential, with more to come once he starts to fill out his frame. He is one of only three 2015 grads listed in the program on a strong team from Maryland. .  http://www.perfectgame.org/Articles/View.aspx?article=9017
