#8 LHSP Stephen Matz (LR: #16)
Bats: R Throws: R
Height: 6' 2" Weight: 192 lb

2010: DNP (Tommy John Surgery Recovery)
2009: DNP (Tommy John Surgery)

The clock is officially ticking on Matz. With his addition to the 40 man roster this winter, Matz now has three seasons to get to the big leagues before he runs out of options and becomes a victim of the waiver wire. After a lengthy Tommy John Surgery recovery that spanned 2 1/2 years, the former 2nd round pick finally took part in his 1st full season and was magnificent posting a 10+ K/9 rate from the left side.

As the team's only left handed prospect, the front office values Matz greatly. He possesses a rare arsenal of a 94-97 mph fastball from the left side, a hard slurve that breaks so perfectly that coaches prefer he keep it rather than change it to a curve or a slider, and a change-up that was top notch for a player coming out of HS.

The story remains the same year in and year out.....IF Matz can stay healthy he has the potential to be a stable and reliable mid rotation guy. He's drawn comparisons to Al Leiter for his premium velocity from the left side along with an extensive injury history. In Leiter's case though it resulted from consistent bouts with blisters not Tommy John Surgery

Anticipated Assignment: (A+) Port St. Lucie starting rotation.
Ceiling: #3 MLB Rotation Starter
Floor: Medium Leverage Middle Innings Reliever
