Thomas
Brennan asked a couple of draft questions yesterday that included who I thought
might still be available when the Mets 3rd round (2nd
pick) comes around at #85.
Here are some names, by
position, that might see still available:
1-20-14 – PG Preseason College All-Americans - First Base -
Sam Travis, Indiana - 2013 Stats: .316 AVG, 22 2B, 2 3B, 10 HR, 57 RBI, 39 BB,
33 SO - Travis didn’t receive as much fanfare as Schwarber last season. One
reason for that is that he hit several points lower than Schwarber, but still
managed to smack 10 homers and knock in 57 runs while nursing a broken hamate
bone for much of the season. Travis, ranked No. 41 in our college prospects
list, has big-time raw power and packs a punch in his 6-foot, 210-pound, frame.
Entering the season 100-percent healthy and ready to go, look for Travis to
tally very good offensive numbers this season. http://www.perfectgame.org/Articles/View.aspx?article=9294
8-24-13 - Most of the top high school hitters in the 2014
draft class are on hand for the Under Armour All-America Game, powered by
Baseball Factory. Friday’s workout at the University of Illinois-Chicago’s
Miller Field featured batting practice, infield and outfield and a home run
derby, winnowing the field for Saturday’s derby prior to the game at Wrigley
Field. Of the 2014 players, shortstop Milton Ramos (Hialeah Gardens, Fla.) put
on the best show Friday. Ramos, who played at Florida Christian High in 2013
and will attend American Heritage this upcoming academic year, entered the
summer with a reputation as a flashy, at times brilliant defender, and he
didn’t disappoint in the workout. http://www.baseballamerica.com/draft/under-armour-all-star-game-notebook/
8-13-13 - The Perfect Game All-American Classic in San Diego
- * One name that really stood out to me that I wasn’t familiar with coming
into the weekend was Stillwater High School (Okla.) third-baseman Joe Littell.
Littell gets very good extension in his swing, and the bat stayed in the zone
as well as any hitter I saw over the weekend. There are some very good hot
corner prospects in this year’s class, but Littell might be at the top of the
list for me now. http://mlbdraftinsider.com/2013/08/thoughts-on-perfect-game-all-american-classic/?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter
8-14-13 – Through The Fence – Top 50 Prospects – 43. Carl
Chester, OF, Lake Brantley HS (FL) - A plus/plus runner who has been times at
6.28 in the 60, the right-hander can wreak havoc on the base paths, as well as
in the outfield where you’d be hard pressed to hit anything over his head. At
6’-0” and 170 pounds, he also shows some raw power in his swing and excellent
bat speed. A quick-twitch athlete with a lot of upside. He stole 18 of 20 bases
as a junior and struck out just 11 times over 110 plate appearances. Committed
to Miami. http://throughthefencebaseball.com/2014-mlb-draft-top-50-prospects/36463#mwWwsFxSUZy7YC5V.99
8-3-13 - Player: Bryce
Carter Primary Position: C Secondary
Position(s): OF Height/Weight: 6’1/195
Bats/Throws: L/R Home Town:
Tulsa, OK School: Cascia Hall
Travel Team(s): Dallas
Tigers Class of: 2014
Committed To: Stanford Scouting Notes: - 2013 Tournament of Stars
notes from Don Olsen: - Bryce has a decent frame, present development that
should fill out a bit more into the 210-215 pound range. He gives off a little bit to Ed Herrmann.
Little trigger, needs to quite the back foot and rotate, but bat speed and path
are ideal for natural loft in swing.
There is some thunder in the bat down the line, especially once he fills
out, good present backspin to project.
Arm strength is okay, but fast twitch catch and release, really hops out
the set. Caught two in game POP for
1.97 and 1.98, sound fundamentally.
Solid receiving skills and provides a good target, rounds out to above
average defensive game. http://bigleaguefutures.net/1/2013/08/03/2014-mlb-draft-profile-bryce-carter/
12-10-13 – TTF – Top 50 HS Players - 37. Grant Hockin, RHP,
Damien HS (CA) - Hockin is an athletic 6’-2” right-hander whose fastball has
touched 95 mph with late life and sits in the 89-92 mph range. He also adds two
solid secondary offerings in a curveball and change-up, and he locates his
pitches well. He repeats his delivery well and still has some projection left.
He is the grandson of Hall of Famer Harmon Killebrew. Committed to UCLA. http://throughthefencebaseball.com/2014-mlb-draft-top-50/40532#zz88YJZTOG8iEa1Z.99
9-10-13 – Top Arms in 2013 Cape Cod League - Dillon
Peters (Texas – Jr. ) 5-10/190, Harwich
Mariners 22 IP, 21 K, 1.22 ERA: FB 89-92 SL 76-77 - Most of the other members of my All-Cape
pitching staff are well above six feet tall. Peters doesn’t possess the same
type of height, but he makes up for that based on his heart and competitive
drive. He would be successful on his intensity alone. When you add that to a
plus FB and a swing and miss slider, you have the makings of a pitcher that can
get outs in any situation. http://bullpenbanter.com/2013-all-cape-team-pitchers/
Thanks, Mack. Interesting prospects. 0ff the cuff, I'd go with Littel (might need a Wright replacement around time he'd be ready in 4-5 years) or Hockin (another arm in arsenal).
