SOURCE - SS - Starlin Castro

A credible source has confirmed to me that the Mets are monitoring and are very interested in SS Starlin Castro

The 23-year old hit .245/.284/.347 in 666-ABs for the Chicago Cubs in 2013.

  1. He basically is coming off a Tejada type season himself. So unless its a change of scenery/attitude swap of those shorstops, I say no thank u.

  2. Ernest, I don't think you get a vote. :)

  3. I wouldn't exactly call Castro's season (691 PA - .245/.284/.347, 10 HR) a Tejada type season. (227 PA - .202/.259/.260, 0 HR) Moreover, Castro has had a couple of .300+ seasons under his young belt. (6 mos. younger than Tejada) If I was Alderson, and my phone rang, and my sec'y said Theo Epstein was on the line and wanted to talk about Castro, I think I'd take the call.

  4. Ha! What the hell do I know. I still want Wilmer Flores as my shortstop.

i would trade montero and tejada for castro. Castro is a legit ball player and would be taught by wright, granderson, etc. its a match made in heaven.

  6. Mack,

Montero is a big prospect for the Mets. You know enough about this SS to give this much up?

  7. Bob Sugar -

You asked the question of Mack, but let me hop in. I would not give up Rafael Montero for Castro. Despite the fact that he is young, and that he put up some impressive numbers in his first two seasons, he has declined two years in a row, and is definitely coming off a down season last year. That plus he is an average fielder at short. I'd give up some good prospects to get him, but not a Montero. And I doubt that they would want Tejada. So I'd be talking deGrom or Mazzoni, and maybe a lower level pitching prospect and or position prospect. I wonder if Mack will agree.

  8. Bob, I would not trade Montero for anyone right now.

He has that much potential at a current minimum team controlled cost.

  9. It's a minimum $49 million commitment for Castro given the contract he's signed already with the Cubs.

I might be more interested in what it takes to get Owings or Franklin.

  10. Well, if it is true... he isn't signed or anything... but, according to a very reliable source within the industry, he is being 'monitored' by the Mets... lots of people are sent out to check out lots of people. I'm sure there are many more shortstops right now under the Mets radar. It seems Castro is one of them.

  11. Mack/Herb,
In hindsight should we have just signed Jose Reyes?

  12. @Bob Sugar...

His 2012 season would have been nice (Value Added: $18.5M) to have and he was well worth his $10M salary.

However he missed significant time due to a severe ankle injury which will likely affect his speed going forward. He still managed be worth his $10M salary (value added: $11.0M) in 2013 but going forward it is going to be harder to actually produce enough to be worth his contract.
    Actual Salary
    2014 salary: $16M
    2015: $22M
    2016: $22M
    2017: $22M

Oliver Projection Values (1.0 WAR = $4.5M of Added Value)
    2014: 3.7 WAR - $16.65M
    2015: 3.4 WAR - $15.3M
    2016: 3.3 WAR - $14.85M
    2017: 2.9 WAR - $13.05M

$82 actual less $59.85M expected value add = $22.15 dead money less $9.5M actuals above value = $12.65M dead money across 6 seasons.

In hindsight.....Yes Sandy should have re-signed Jose Reyes
