PORT ST. LUCIE, FL – In a tune-up for Opening Day in two weeks, the Binghamton Mets defeated the Jacksonville Suns (Miami Marlins), 3-2, in spring training action Thursday afternoon at the New York Mets complex.

Steven Matz, a second-round pick by the Mets in 2009 out of Ward Melville High School in East Setauket, NY, started for the B-Mets and struck out four, while allowing two hits over four innings. The southpaw enjoyed his first full season in pro ball last year going 5-6 with a 2.62 ERA over 21 starts with the Savannah Sand Gnats (Low-A).

The B-Mets will be back in action Friday afternoon to battle the Springfield Cardinals at the St. Louis Cardinals’ spring training facility in Jupiter, Florida. First pitch is set for 1:00 PM.
