Mack's Met Pick at #10

    1.  Astros - RHSP Tyler Kolek – Shepard (TX) HS – The day had to come when a high school senior would be picked first in the draft. The day also has come that Kolek has past NC State’s Carlos Rodon as the first pick overall. We’ll talk about Rodon next, but Kolek has basically been unhittable all season and was recently clocked at 102mph. There's none better in this draft.

   2.  Marlins – LHSP Carlos Rodon – NC State – The Marlins are not going to look at this gift horse in the mouth. Never in their wildest dreams did they think they would have a chance at Rodon, who could be ready for the parent team by opening day 2016. He’s a tremendous talent that projects at the SP1 level which would make for quite the 1-2 combination with Jose Fernandez.

   3.  White Sox -  The White Sox scouting team has already met face to face with Rodon, Kolek, Tyler Beede, Jeff Hoffman, Trea Turner, and Jacob Gatewood. You can’t fool around with the 3rd pick overall in the draft, so one of these to names will be the pick. Hoffman has struggled this season while Turner has had trouble with producing extra-base hits. I see the Sox going with the ‘other’ sure bet at short – SS Jacob Gatewood – Clovis (CA) HS

   4.  Cubs – If things go as stated above, it will still leave on the board the player that Through The Fence baseball says is the targeted pick by the Cubs – RHSP Tyler Beede – Vanderbilt. Like Rodon, he could be major league ready by opening day 2016. Comparison: Matt Harvey. I absolutely love Beede and was hoping he would be around at #10; however, Sandy would have probably gone high school anyway.

   5.  Twins – The important thing to remember at this point in ‘my’ draft that you always pick ‘the best player available’ regardless of position. It really doesn’t matter what position needs to be filled on the Twins 2015 opening day roster. The player you pick here will only help you in the 2018-2019 range. The best player still on ‘the board’ is also the best catcher in the draft. Scouts say there is no chance he will remain behind the plate and this is a corner outfielder in the making. Still, you have to go with the talent here: C Alex Jackson – Ranco Bernardo (CA) HS

   6.  Mariners – Seattle is in a similar position that the Marlins were at with the second pick in the draft. There never was a plan for Trea Turner to still be on the board at six and there is no way that the Mariners will let him get by them now. Turner isn’t having the greatest junior season, but he’s a future star of this game: SS Trea Turner – NC State

   7.  Phillies and 8. Rockies – There are two power pitchers that are still on the board at this point in the draft and neither of these teams can afford to pass on either one of them. I have no idea who the Phillies like better but, whoever they pick, the other guy will go to the Rockies. They are: LHSP Brady Aiken – Cathedral Catholic (CA) HS… and RHSP Touki Toussaint – Coral Springs (FL) HS.

9. Blue Jays  - The Blue Jays pick again two picks later, at #11, a compensation pick for not signing Phil Bickford last year. Many team play a little bonus compensation trickery here by choosing the cheaper guy first. In this case, I look for the Jays to lock up the first true catcher of the draft. This is baseball’s hardest position and this guy looks to stick here: Max Pentacost – Kennesaw State.

10. Mets – So, we’re here.

This is usually the time my palms start to sweat, waiting for that web feed to tell me and the baseball world who ‘my team picked with their first pick.

Will I be furiously be putting together bio information on Courtney Hawkins

Or would I start drooling knowing that Austin Wilson was going to be mine?

Well, we all know how well I’ve made this pick in the past, so I’m going to end it here and you decide what name should be called out…

“…and with the 10th pick in the major league baseball draft, the New York Mets pick… “

  2. Actually Derek, Holmes is a great pick. I often talk about the "Big 5 Power RHPs" coming out this year from HS and he is one of them.

I would be thrilled to have the Mets sign him and play him the rest of this year with the GCL Mets
