Minors Bus –
I
was once on a bus with a team as we departed for a long, daytime trip. Not even
a mile from the park, we watch a tractor trailer collide with another vehicle
right in front of us. The driver was knocked unconscious. I also recall the
middle-of-the-night wakeup when our bus just missed being slammed by a passing
train at a railroad crossing. Or the time the axles on the left side of the bus
busted and we cruised into town with the bus tilted to the left. We looked like
a circus act coming to town. The bus was tilted about a foot, and the driver

Ranked 2nd - When you face up to things, you find
that Wright is one of the best hitters in all of MLB. It would be facetious to
deny him that, especially when he’s posted back-to-back six-win seasons in the
past two seasons, and he did so last season in roughly two-thirds of an MLB
season. After 2011, it looked like Wright was facing the start of his ending,
but like every truly great MLB player, he looked his injuries right in the face
and didn’t blink. During this MLB season, he will have to face the fact that
his hitting statistics are likely to regress, but he should save face if he can
suit up for a full MLB season. And even if Flores steals a little MLB playing
time at the hot corner, expect Wright to faithfully face the media before and

Rank – 25th - This is still not Drew, and it’s
still not likely to be Drew, because as we’ve been saying for months, any
upgrade Drew may be over Tejada is probably not really worth it to the 2014
Mets. That doesn’t mean it won’t be Franklin or Gregorius, both of whom have
been rumored to be the target of Mets interest, though Detroit’s sudden entry
into the shortstop market won’t help Sandy Alderson there.
Anyway, for the moment, Tejada appears to be the man here, and that is a cause
of considerable angst among Mets fans, who remember — accurately — how awful he
was in 2013. They maybe don’t remember that he was actually pretty decent in
the two seasons before that, and that 2013 was marred by a strained quad and a
fractured leg, and that he somehow trails only Joey Votto and Matt Carpenter in
line drive rate since 2010. Since he’s still only 24, yes, it makes absolute
sense to give him another shot, though the likelihood of him actually holding
the job all year is low.
Not shown here is Wilmer Flores,
because when it’s questionable that he can even handle third base, the idea of
him actually seeing major league time at shortstop seems beyond laughable. Yet
the talk of it won’t go away, which probably says more about the other options

Juan –
Lagares
has essentially won the center field starting job, because of his superb
defense while his offense is in question.
In 2013, Lagares hit for a slash of .242/.281/.352 in 292 at
bats with 4 home runs, 34 runs batted in, and 6 stolen bases. Lagares did have
28 defense runs saved which was among the elite defenders in the outfield. His
WAR (Wins Above Replacement) was 3.7, which was astounding due to his abysmal
offensive year.
This spring he is 12 of 38 with 3 runs batted in and a .381
on base percentage. The right-hander had his moments last season showing

As
trade rumors swirl around Diamondbacks shortstop Didi
Gregorius, fans of potential landing spots, such as the Mets, are
scurrying to find out what they can about the 24-year-old. Upon my own
examination, I found an interesting anomaly in his performance against
left-handed pitching. Let's take a look at what I noticed, and see if it means
anything. Looking at Didi Gregorius' splits, it is obvious to see that he
doesn't hit left-handed pitching. At least, not yet. He is 24 years old, having
only played in 111 major league games, so as a left-handed batter, early
struggles against southpaws can almost be expected. But there is something

Adam Rubin @AdamRubinESPN - Bobby Parnell will
throw two innings in a minor-league game, which spared him the three-hour drive
to Fort Myers.
Marc Carig @MarcCarig - Parnell
needed 11 pitches to get three outs. Hitting 94 mph on scouts' gun, up from
last time. Parnell tossed 2 scoreless, allowed one hit against High-A
Cardinals. 29 pitches, 2 strikeouts.
Dillon Gee started… allowed only two singles through three innings
(1.13)… then back to back singles in the fourth… sac fly brings in run (2.08)
and a third single in the inning makes the pen stir a little… gets out of
inning with one run damage… final stat line: 5.1-IP, 5-H, 1-ER, 4-K, 0-BB, 1.69…sure
looks like an opening day pitcher to me.
Ruben Tejada (.241) opens the first with his fourth straight hit, a
double… excellent defensive play in the second to stop ball in the hole… walked
in 4th and scored on Duda home run…
Lucas Duda continues
to be an OBP machine in the first, with a HBP… 2-run homer in fourth
(.333)... played five innings for first
game since March 3rd: 1-for-3 with 2-run homer and HBP
Nice
one-two with Duda and Ike Davis in the same
lineup… Davis double makes it 2-0 in the 1st… draws walk in second
at bat… another double in the 4th (.273)… went 3-3 for the day
(.333)…
(this is what you hope for from this lack of
depth offense… if these guys could start off this way, and Chris Young, Grandy and Travis d’Arnaud produced properly, we
could win some games here…)
Andrew Brown (.294)
seems to be feeling the pressure regarding who will go north and doubles in
Davis…
Zach Lutz (.321)
singles in Brown… 2-4 (.344) for the day and nowhere to go but Vegas…
is this what we call
playing at a different level?
Are they going to call this after one? The Captain (.323) triples in Lutz…
Wow… Teagarden hits a 2-run bomb… 7-0. Is this the last time baseball sees
Ricky Nolasco?
Scott Rice (0.2-IP) and Gonzalez Germen (1.0) had scoreless
outings, but it was Jeurys Familia that I was really interested in… pitched a scoreless eighth, but
was pulled in the ninth afrr a leadoff single…
Summary: If things
keep going this way, there will be plenty of phone calls coming in for one of
these first basemen…
