We have a new writer on Mack’s Mets… his name is Mr. Controversial
and he is a fan of… wait for it… the New York Yankees.. This should be interesting. Mr. C will post around two times a month and keep us up to date with what’s going on with that team up in the Bronx that has a real payroll.

I basically took today off… long overdue. My wife was a judge at the Hilton Head Island Wing Fest and I joined her for the day

And, according to the lack of comments, so did all of you :) ...

The site has grown, especially with original material; however, it remains a high school/college cut and paste site on the weekends. We'll be able to add more Mets related material once the season starts, but we will always post original material first, between the hours of 8am-6pm.

By the way... I heard from Matthew Silva and Michael Scannell and they both said they will become more active once the season starts.

As I have said in the past, the eventual goal is to have five original posts per day, seven days a week, totaling 35 per week. Right now, we average around 15-20... we're getting there.

I did peak at the score… nice!

I was more thrilled at only giving up two runs rather than scoring 10. However, Chris Young (3-3, .349), Ike Davis (2-run HR, .333), Wilmer Flores (3-5, 3-run HR, .244), and Travis d’Arnaud (first HR) were the bonus

I saw that Gonzalez Germen (6.00), Vic Black (4.50) and Kyle Farnsworth (5.63) pitched well, but all three may be doing so a little too late. Of the three, my guess is only Ricky Vaughn goes north... err... Black.

Bunting –

The math is still probably on the side of more bunt attempts. It’s definitely on the side of hitters practicing bunting more often so that they can be more successful when it counts. There should at least be the perception of the threat of a bunt. Over the last two years, shifted batters haven’t been great bunters, but when they’ve bunted the ball fair they’ve reached base twice as often as they haven’t. The numbers show that bunting against the shift is by no means an easy thing, not that any aspect of hitting is easy. And based on the Carlos Pena/Rays example, it doesn’t look like bunting is the solution to eliminating the overshift. It might just slightly alter the overshift, if bunts are dropped down with greater success and greater frequency. Shifting, presumably, is here to stay. The only question is exactly what the shifts are going to look like. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/more-about-bunting-and-beating-the-shift/

  1. Hey Mack - everyone needs a day off. Curious, did any of the wings need TJ surgery? I know Duda did not play in the main game, so he had to be in the minor league side playing, curious how he did in this suddenly and surprisingly hot contest yesterday. Lastly, Flores 3-4 with homer and 4 rib eyes yesterday, so will Terry sit him today?

  2. Morning Thomas -

It's funny... I didn't have a single wing. I went over to an Italian restaurant that is owned by an old disc jockey of mine and had pasta...

I think Duda went 0-5 on the back fields but don't quote me. I will say that 'insiders (not fans) think he will win the battle over Davis. They also think that Ike needs to keep his clothes in his travel bag. I'm writing about this Monday morning at 10am about the connection to Milwaukee and Pittsburgh that still remains.

We've got two games today... tough to sit someone :)

    1. I had pasta too - an Italian specialty, as I suppose Duda is, as his name sounds Italian. Ike has had good springs and horrible season starts...if I am Sandy, I don't trust ike

  3. Mack,
Yes, you deserved a day off. In case you didn't hear, Bartolo was a hitting start as well, and Collins is now considering hitting him5th because of his "quick" feet. Despite the injuries, I am somewhat comfortable that one of Ike or Luke will step up and be serviceable as a 5/6 hitter. If that happens, and Flores can hold his own with the glove at SS, the complexion of this line up could change dramatically.

I assume TC will now sit Colon today...

  5. If they do not trade for a SS, I am comfortable with Wilmer at SS...once enough hitting occurs, pressure is off and whole team hits better. They start to think, Lwe are a hitting team" and assume that mentality. That will not happen if Tejada plays much. A successful team once put Kevin Mitchell at SS...it worked

You will be comfortable with Flores if he makes 2 errors that causes 2 runs to score, but goes 3-5 from the plate with 4-RBIs

    1. You are right there, Mack. I'd like both but prefer offense over D. And I am already concerned with offense from Grandy and d'Arnaud, who sounds like Ike of 2013, with switching his stances, and 1B too, and think all of those guys would benefit from another potent bat (Flores) over an impotent one (Tejada) to take offensive mental pressure off the whole lineup. As recently as when Delgado played, there was enough offense to where all the hitters felt "it's gonna happen" and Flores in the line up might tip the scales towards that mentality.

  7. Terry Collins, of course, benched Flores after his 3-5 day with 4 RBIs. The Great Motivator is in rare form. He also benched Travis d'Arnaud. Way to let the young players know you're in their corner! Finally, he started Omar Quintanilla because he apparently hasn't seen enough of him in the past two years instead of Seratelli who is a newcomer to the organization.

It must have physically pained Terry to wave goodbye to Farnsworth knowing someone under 100 may make the team in his place.

It's hard to play 2 games and rest 'Flores'... lol...

I think TC thinks ST is like a rotating wheel in which every player gets his turn regardless of what he produced the day before...

I think the Dice-K/Mejia decision may be the last straw for Collins. We now what the fans want here. What happens if Dice is picked and pitches bad? Does anyone really care about the fan reaction.

BTW... I already know the answer to this question. I hope you do too.

  9. Mack - Collins would clearly want to rest Cal Ripkin - and Lou Gehrig for that matter. Rest is a wonderful thing.

And let's send Mejia to minors to keep his innings count down, and oh, let's have him start in AAA so he runs out of innings by Memorial Day...let him throw...in Queens
