(if that would qualify as like a .230/.330/.470 line?)

Of course yes, some hope. Not enough hope
Josh Thole –
This is Thole’s six major league camp.
He went to Port St. Lucie as a Mets prospect in 2009, in 2010 he had a chance,
losing out to Rod Barajas and Blanco. He was the everyday catcher with the
2011-12 Mets. Last year he came to Dunedin fighting for a job.
“Same thing this year,”
said Thole in the first base dugout. “I know I have to hit to make this team.”
Thole, who hit .175
with one homer and eight RBIs, has two hits in four at-bats in the early going.
“I’ve only been here
one year, I hit .175, so rightly so the perception is I’m a .175 hitter, I have
to change that,” said Thole. http://www.torontosun.com/2014/03/04/blue-jays-should-go-with-an-experienced-catcher-for-ra-dickey

– I don’t think there was a single player in the
Mets organization that I was more at ease with than Josh, who seems to be having
major problems holding on to his job in Toronto. Read the sad story.
A lot of
writers, both beat and blog, are saying that it’s S.O.G.O.T.P. time for Sandy Alderson. Actually, the
shiting and potting a Wilpon thing. Scott Boras still has two clients, one at first base, and the other at
shortstop, that could be the difference in a bad to playoff season. They both
could be brought to the Mets for around a combined $25mil a year for 2-3 years,
which all could be paid back through increased ticket sales during these years.
Trust me, you put a team on the field that is competitive and fighting it out
with Atlanta or first base, you are going to sell a lot more tickets that don’t
cost five bucks.
Ruben Tejada would make a wonderful backup middle infielder and you can pick
between Duda and Davis to be the AAA/emergency first baseman. The other could
be DFA’d off for a trade for a chip.
I’m sort
of done with screwing around. This team needs to fill in the offensive cracks
that this pitching staff deserves to have around it and what better was to do
it than with more of Wilpon’s unspent fortune.
After years of
establishing himself as one of the top shortstop prospects in the game, Xander Boagerts’ big postseason solidified his role as
the starting shortstop for the 2014 Red Sox. With Bogaerts ready for the Big
Show, management appeared comfortable letting Drew walk, with the future having
already arrived. http://throughthefencebaseball.com/boston-red-sox-preview-2/41460#YjciW2YelX4A7DeP.99
Gary asked -
Good morning Mack, Just
wanting your opinions on a few things. In Mets minors there's an article where
Depo talks about a few minor leaguers all of whom I read about except Marcos Molina...your thoughts on him please. Also I am always surprised when on SNY shows
like DNY and Loudmouths they can go on
and on about wanting to see Thor pitching in Queens to start the season when
the know: 1: he has a pitch count limit this season 2: he has only pitched a limited # of inning
above single A and 3: ownership would be
foolish to lose a year of team control for a few months now. Lets go Mets,
Gary.
Mack – Thanks Gary for the
questions.
Molina is
one of the international guys that, like IF Amed Rosario, has impressed the scouts more than the stats created. Frankly,
I had never know a thing about him until he popped up on one of the prospect
ranking sheets (BA?). I did some checking around and yes, he was highly thought
of by the scouts that saw him pitch. Everything is raw at these ages (I
remember a 19-year old Jeurys Familia coming to Savannah) but when you hear that sound a ball can make
in a catcher’s glove, you know you may have a big fish on your line here.
Regarding
Loud Mouths, that’s organized chatter. I was in radio for the beginning of talk
radio. Howard, Rush, Imus, Eskin… all
were told by program directors that, the more shocking crap that came out of
their mouths, the more people would listen. I watch the Daily New half hour and
then turn that channel off until the post game (Mets blockout game coverage in
South Carolina).I suggest you get Netflix rather than watch that crap.
3-5 Game Highlights -
Kirk Nieuwenhuis continues to hit his way into a utility slot on opening day...
Eric Young Jr. wants to make sure everybody remembers he's still around...
Jenrry Mejia didn't do enough to earn himself the SP5 slot. He was wild and threw a ground ball into what seemed like the Atlantic Ocean. Major League starters have to have better control of their game, even if it's their first spring game. The good news was 3-Ks through two innings... the bad news... 4-hits, one throwing error and two walks in the first two innings...
Dillon Gee did... err... okay. Was pulled after 2.01-IP due to pitch count... gave up one run with one strike out...
This might be the last time we see John Church, Cory Mazzoni , and Adam Kolarek in Big Boy Camp this spring...
Carlos Torres gave 1.2 more reasons he will be the 'long man' out of the pen this year...
Anthony Seratelli proved he's capable of producing a clutch 2-run single...
Erik Campbell is doing everything he can to prove it's his turn this year...

Eric Campbell is an intiguing guy and seems to just lack a power tool - steroids use aside, if I were in his position, I'd be slamming the weight room all offseason to correct that flaw. it could mostly be his swing, but the same swing and more strength should mean more power, especially if it is a well controlled (non-Ike) swing, I'd think. Anyone know of his trainng regimen?
ReplyDeleteLet's hope no one is anointing Kirk as the next utility guy. He had a Met stretch in 2012 and 2013 where he went 9 for 90 with 40 Ks. Ankiel-like #'s. I always fear this guy showing some promise and then regressing to that. I'd rather have Dekker (who has always showed struglle then a step forward), or Eric Campbell out there.
I don't believe if we got drew and morales we would make the playoffs. It would be a step forward this year but probably be a hindrance next year when better options may be available. The only offensive free agent I believe would of helped this year in making a push towards playoffs and definitely in ticket sales would have been Cano.

ReplyDeleteYou and I disagree on this.
The Mets are only a coupl of decent hitters away from a playoff team, mainly because of their excellent pitching.
Drew isn't that good of a hitter and gets injured to easily and Morales really still hasn't been the same since he jumped on home plate 3 years ago. Next year we will have more prospects that will be able to be traded and can bring back better of a return then those two players. The way the team stands now, we are just going to finish in 4th place again.
DeleteAlso if they got Cano ticket sales would have skyrocketed through the roof. Merchandise sales would have followed suit as well. So instead of spending on c. Young, colon and trading duda and Ike, for about the same amount of $$$ we could have had Cano and boosted this fan base.
A middle of the order of
Murphy
Cano
Wright
Granderson
Would have been a strong enough lineup to push us to playoff contention.
Thomas -
ReplyDeleteCampbell isn't a bulky weight room answer... he's exactly what he is... an all-star AAAA player that has a chance to make Queens as a utility player... can play both corner outfield and infield positions and is a consistent .280 hitter
Here's a wild thought....
ReplyDeleteIf Seratelli shows he is capable of playing SS, then why not hand him both the starting job and the leadoff spot in the batting order. He has some power, good speed, high OBP vs. Ruben Tejada who has...?
Mack,
ReplyDeleteI'm with you on picking up Drew or making a trade to upgrade Shortstop being a necessity right now. I have to point to Alderson's statement about "being a 90 win team" as the reason he has to make a move now, not later.
I may not believe that the team currently is a 90 win team. Others may not believe the Mets can win that many games, But if Alderson believes it, then he sees this team as fighting for a playoff spot right up until the end of the season.
If a general manager sees their team as being in that type of position, I would assume they would realize the importance of every single game, because losing 2-3 more games or winning 2-3 more games could possibly make all of the difference in the world with making the playoffs and/or playoff opponents.
I would imagine this would make the general manager realize that a team with Drew (or other upgrade through trade) as a starter with Tejada as a back-up is a much better combination than Tejada as a starter and Quintanilla as a back-up. This difference could be your 2-3 wins over the course of a full year.
@Reese
ReplyDeleteBelieve me....its not outside the realm of possibility....
Hey Bob Gregory
ReplyDeleteI am not an expert in WAR, and I am not saying you are relying on WAR in your comment, but I've seen enough games to say that Drew or Franklin, with Tejada as a sub, will lead to a lot more than 2 to 3 more wins over a Tejada/Quintanilla combo. How about 5 to 7. Sometimes the statisticians just don't capture it.
Sandy has to do something. Ruben is giving us a wake up call that all will not go optimally at SS this year if he is the man.already
Tom
ReplyDeleteI just threw out the 2-3 games as being a "low-ball" number. A number that would be a given, to make my point that........... once again......... Alderson's words do not match his actions.
I am trying to figure out whether Alderson believes what he says.... but isnt able to follow through his thoughts to the next logical step
or
If Alderson doesnt believe what he says..... but believes that Met fans are not smart enought to think through the next logical step and get upset.
I wouldn't want to be bogged down with Drews salary after this year. So sign him to a one year deal. We will have more options next year with free agency and more prospects to trade for a shortstop.
ReplyDeleteThis year we will maybe win 81 games at most, so hopefully c. Young, Colon, Murphy, Gee, and if they get Drew can be traded after the all star break to stock up more prospects.
Then we can give Lagares, Puello and Flores full time duty in the majors the rest of season. That way we can see what they got going into 2015.
John
ReplyDeleteI go back to my comment earlier though.....
if Alderson believes this team is on the edge of playoff games... (90 wins)
and every game counts....
why are you as a general manager.. .... going to stop ... when one more player....
at a discounted price (according to what other shortstops have gotten in the market)....?????
heck ..... the contract at this point shouldn't even be an issue.... because of:
1) how close 90 games is to playoffs- every additional game counts sooo much more
2) the discounted price & yrs (if drew)
3) the player could always be traded afterwards (if drew)
4) the new shortstop could be traded for
I don't think drew gets u to the promise land, but I would sign him at a discount and then trade him in July.
ReplyDeleteAlso signing Drew won't put more fannies in the seats to justify the extra expenditure from their point of view.
They need another big bat in that lineup and then fill it with young defensive cheap filler players. Drew and morales aren't those type of players. Yeah they are experienced but not the put you over the top allstar caliber that we need.
I would catagorize them as Jason bay types, not a Gian Carlo Stanton type. That's the type of bat we need.

I couldn't agree more about signing Drew and Morales. I'm so sick of waiting for impending doom when any of Duda, Davis, or Tejada are involved in any kind of play whether it is at bat or in the field. Teams are always looking for players with tools and those 3 just seem to have very limited tool buckets. Drew adds an above average defender with good pop for a SS, while Morales adds a switch hitting power bat. I'm sure Morales defense at 1B is questionable but so is Duda's. And while Davis has a good glove his quickness leaves a lot to be desired.
If the ownership suite wants to be a 90 win team on the field then they need to be a 90 win front office. Signing both Drew and Morales takes the payroll above 100 mil. Both seem to be able to be signed for anywhere from 1-3 years so the commitment does not have to be forever. Imagine what a buzz there would be around the Mets if next week, Drew and Morales strolled into camp. Let Murph leadoff. Murphy, Drew, Wright, Grandy, Morales, Young, Travis, (EY/Lagares). That lineup would sell some tickets!

Jeff, there's a reason why these guys are still Free Agents. Its not just about the money. Its about the money in relation to the draft pick they would lose if they were to sign Drew or Morales. Plus Drew's demands aren't helping. To make the signing worthwhile for the Mets with the loss of a pick it has to be at least 2 years. Drew is asking for 2 with an opt out clause after the 1st (which he would certainly take). Is one year of Stephen Drew, in a season where we are not expecting to make the playoffs, worth losing out on another Dominic Smith type draft pick? At this point I think not.

So after one spring training game, two innings, mind you first real action after surgery. Jenrry Mejia didn't do enough to earn himself the SP5 slot.
Are you kidding me. Is spring over, I didn't realize everything was based off the very first spring training game. Come On Man

In fairness, the cards are stacked against Mejia. Terry Collins has clearly stated that he prefers a veteran like Matsuzaka or Lannan over Mejia so the only way Mejia is going to break camp as the #5 starter is to force his way on.
Yesterday's performance is not gonna get it done due to the BB's
Zozo -
ReplyDeleteYou don' honestly think some team is going to trade a Stanton-type bat at this point in the spring???
No definitely not, but that's what this team needs next. Another solid option, not drew or morales. Another upper echelon type player like wright/ Stanton that can bat 3 or 4. When that finally happens we will take the next step.
DeleteMack
ReplyDeleteWhat are your thoughts on Alderson's words in comparison to his actions?
Does he realize or care that Met fans become upset or confused when it seems that he says one thing and then does the opposite?
Should he care?
If he does care..... yet still has this disconnect between his words and actions.... should Met fans begin to seriously question his leadership?
If he doesn't care..... how should Met fans react if the team's performance doesn't live up to his stated expectations?
Look, my comments on Mejia (and I'm a BIG Mejia fan) were simply based on the fact that he did not show the command that Syndergaard, Montero, and deGrom did on their first two innings.
ReplyDeleteThe end reuslt of the stat line did not tell the full picture and it's my job to tell you what I interpret and see.
For now, Mejia continues to have the same problem he has had since he has put on a Mets uniform... consistent command.
Well then Zozo, it better be Grandy or, based on your parameters, this season is over until the next free agency period
ReplyDeleteYes siree bob!!! Trust me we will just be rooting for the kids to get better and the vets to be traded...
DeleteOk I agree the deck is stacked against jenrry mejia, but I don't feel his performance will be the reason he don't make the 25, it's terry Collins biased for veterans
ReplyDeleteClyde - every manager has his own style. TC's is old school. I don't like it either
