Charlotte 9 - St. Lucie 5
The St. Lucie Mets committed five errors in an ugly 9-5 loss to the Charlotte Stone Crabs on Tuesday at Charlotte Sports Park.
With the game tied 4-4 in the seventh, the Mets could not turn what would have been an inning-ending double play with the bases loaded to maintain the tie. Instead, Phillip Evans’ wild throw from second to first on the turn got by first baseman Aderlin Rodriguez and two runs scored.
The Crabs piled on three runs on three hits, including an RBI triple by Tyler Goeddel, in the eighth to pull away. Goeddel scored on his own triple when Evans could not handle the relay throw from the outfield to make it 9-4.
Jake Kuebler took the loss for the Mets, allowing four runs - two earned - in two innings of work. The Crabs scored all three of their eighth inning runs against Julian Hilario. Prior to Tuesday, the Mets bullpen had not allowed a run in the series.
Steven Matz tossed five innings in a no decision. He gave up two runs on five hits. He walked four and struck out two.
Jose Molina earned the win for the Crabs, who salvaged the series after dropping the first two games.
Austin Pruitt pitched into the seventh in a no decision. Marcus Jensen got the six-out save.
The Mets took a 2-1 lead in the third on a solo home run by Jairo Perez, his third of the road trip and fourth of the season. With the game tied 2-2 in the fifth, Miakis De La Cruz blasted his third home run of the season to put the Mets up 3-2.
The Crabs tied the game against Kuebler in the sixth on Andrew Toles’ RBI single. They took the lead on a bunt by Hector Guevara that brought home Marty Gantt to make it 4-3.
The Mets managed to tie the game in the seventh when Dilson Herrera beat out an infield single with two outs and Albert Cordero scored.
Unfortunately for the Mets, the bullpen allowed five runs over the next two innings.
The loss snapped the Mets’ three-game winning streak, but they finished the six-game road trip with a 4-2 record. - team press release
